NEW HAVEN, Conn. ? Four Yale women's tennis players, led by team captain Elizabeth Epstein, have been chosen to play in the ITA All-American Championships.
The tournament will be played between September 29 and October 7 at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, California.? The tournament is divided into three sections: the main draw, the qualifiers, and the prequalifiers.? The prequalifiers will play first, and to advance on to the qualifiers bracket they will have to win three matches in their pool.? The same procedure applies to advancing out of the qualifiers bracket into the main draw.?
Epstein, a senior who will be playing at the All-American Championships for the second consecutive year, will be participating in both the singles and doubles draws as a qualifying player.? Epstein earned the No. 85 spot in the ITA preseason rankings, and will look to live up to that lofty rank following a season in which she compiled a 25-13 record for the Bulldogs, playing in the No. 1 spot.? Epstein, despite finishing the 2011-12 season unranked, notched victories over the No. 105 and No. 110 ranked players in the nation.
In doubles, Epstein will be joined by junior Annie Sullivan, who will be playing at the All-American Championships for the first time.? The pair will be playing in the qualifying round.? Epstein and Sullivan begin the season at No. 40 in the ITA rankings, and since they began playing together, the two have compiled a 21-1 record.
Junior Blair Seideman will play in the prequalifying round, meaning that she will have to win three matches to advance on to the qualifying round.? Seideman finished last season on a 16-4 tear in singles play, all at Nos. 2 and 3 for the Bulldogs.
The final Yale selection is sophomore Hanna Yu, who is an alternate for the prequalifying draw.? Yu is currently at No. 8 on the alternates list, meaning that she will need eight players in the draws above her to drop out of the tournament in order for her to play.? Last season, Yu alternated with Seideman in the Nos. 2 and 3 slots, compiling a 26-10 record in singles.
