Apple Stocks Up on Components for Fall Product Launch - AllThingsD

Blackpool Creative

Apple hasn?t yet officially announced the fall event at which it is expected to debut the next iteration of the iPhone, but it?s definitely planning one.

IMore was first to report that the company has scheduled a special event for Wednesday, September 12, and now we?ve confirmed it as well. Sources tell AllThingsD that Apple is currently planning an event for that week. And while we haven?t yet confirmed its focus, history suggests it will indeed be the new iPhone. One thing?s for certain, though: Apple is ramping up for a big fall product cycle. And to see that, you need only look at the recent spike in the company?s prepayment for inventory components.

According to Apple?s latest 10-Q filing, prepayment for inventory components rose $1.15 billion sequentially in the June quarter. That?s a big increase, one that puts such prepayments at their highest level in four years ? 12.6 percent of Apple?s total sales, according to Wells Fargo Securities analyst Maynard Um. And as Um notes, they?re a good indicator that Apple is ramping up for a big product launch ? or several of them.

?Historically, such increases have been followed by a solid ramp-up in revenue in the following 2-3 quarters,? Um said in a Monday note to clients. ?In our view, an increase in inventory component prepayment may suggest that Apple is securing supply for potential new product launches.?

Spanish economy shrinks faster

Spain's downturn deepened in the second quarter, with the economy shrinking 0.4 percent after contracting 0.3 percent in the first three months of 2012, official data showed Monday.

The figures from the national statistics institute INE confirmed Bank of Spain data issued last week, compounding the problems the government faces in an economy expected not to return to growth until 2014.

INE said the second quarter outcome reflected "weaker domestic demand which was offset in part by a positive contribution from external demand."

Earlier this month, the government said the economy would remain in recession next year, shrinking 0.5 percent instead of growing 0.2 percent as previously expected.

The economy was tipped to shrink 1.5 percent this year, with unemployment hitting an unprecedented 24.6 percent, it said.

Spain, in a tailspin since a massive property bubble burst in 2008, was forecast to return to growth of 1.2 percent in 2014 and 1.9 percent in 2015.

The International Monetary Fund expects the Spanish economy to shrink 1.7 percent this year and 1.2 percent in 2013.

Separately, INE said the inflation rate in July rose sharply to 2.2 percent on a 12-month basis from 1.8 percent in June.

Interview With Michael D. Sellers, Who Produced

Interview With Michael D. Sellers, Who Produced ?Karla? for MovieBank Studios
The following is an interview with Michael D. Sellers, who developed (with the aid of intrepid moviebank studios investors) the controversial film ?Karla? for MovieBank Studios. The film depicts the crimes of the infamous Canadian husband & wife slaying team of Karla Homolka & Paul Bernardo. Its acquittance in Canada was met with howls of objection from Canadian politicians & media outlets.

Q: This is undoubtedly one of the most controversial, wild articles in modern Canadian history, & it is essentially still unfolding. Karla Homolka, who was just brought out from jail a couple of months ago, was still in jail when you began making this film. Did you ever so sense
you were making the film ?too soon??

A: Well, when the conveived of doing a project on Karla Homolka & Paul Bernardo was premier brought to me by director Joel Bender, it was January 2004 & ?Monster? was in the theaters. The murders in that motion picture took spot at about the same time that these do so initially, no, we conveived enough of time had passed. Indeed, now, as the film is being brought out ? the murders themselves are fifteen years in the past. But there
are incomparable views to this subject which have kept it alive in uncommon styles ? Karla?s plea negotiate & resulting brief jail stay, her acquittance this recent summer, the courtroom overturning the post-release restrictions. All of these stuff have kept the tale alive & made it seem like the crimes were committed yesterday. But it?s been fifteen years, & we conveive that is a reasonable, & respectful total of time.

Q: You did explore a fine negotiate about the legal ramifications of saying this story, & were in close communicating with congressmen of the victims? families. Could you speak about that procedure a bit & what the effect was of your discussions?

A: From the beginning, Tim Danson?the attorney who represents the victims? families?said that the families respected our right to make the motion picture & would only contradict it whenever the film incorporated depictions of their daughters which might fairly be construed as either disrespectful or pornographic. Tim characterized pornographic as nakedness or simulated intercourse on screen by the actresses portraying the victims. We never intended to include either of those components in the film, so there was very no problem. When we finished the edit, I took a reflect to Toronto & showed it to Tim, & they concurred that it was not pornographic & they would not contradict the acquittance of the film. Misha Collins & Laura Prepon in ?Karla?

Q: There were articles that you removed numerous scenes at the families? request.

A: We removed 8 frames ? 1/3 of one 2nd ? of a long shot crosswise a room since Tim felt that whenever you played it frame by frame on a DVD you might find out a flash of nakedness which was not detectable when played at normal speed. We concurred to do this. That was the only change. You have to remember ? there had been an ongoing & productive dialogue up to the point wherever we showed the movie, & that dialogue did impact the edit in certain ways?not in the shape of postulates from the family, but just from dialogue & discussion. So there were numerous changes, but not as a result of the screening.

Q: What kind of changes?

A: Well, Tim was capable to provide supplemental background on numerous of the sensitivities of the families, stuff that very were substantial to them,
and we took that into consideration. One exemplar would be the subject of Leslie Mahaffey being locked out of her house, & that playing a role in her becoming accosted by Bernardo. We downplayed that prospect since it?s a sore point for the fellowship & not decisive in any path to our story.

Q: What was the point-of-view from which you needed to present the film?

A: Point of view in this film is interesting, & challenging. On the one hand, it?s Karla?s story. We contact her at the opening as she is about to experience an elongated psychiatric rating in the autumn of 2000, eight years into her 12-year jail term. We watch all of the
events in the past?everything from the earlier scenes with Paul through the crimes & eventually a tiny bit of the trial?from her point of view. But that point of view is repeatedly challenged by the psychiatrist who is interviewing her. He doesn?t ?buy into? her story, but preferably attempts to peel distant the layers of the onion, exposing Karla?s attempts at ?spin?, forcing Karla to recognize stuff that she doesn?t need to acknowledge.

Q: Did your approach to the tale evolve over time?

A: Yes & no. I all of the time felt that it was Karla?s story, not Paul?s. But I think, as we got deeper into it, we began to comprehend the ramifications of this on more levels, & that led to numerous changes.

Q: Such as.?

A: Such as the decisiveness to use the interviews with the psychiatrist as a wraparound. We basically felt that yes, it wants to be Karla?s story, but you need a counterpoint?you cannot let her just say it her path without any counter-argument being presented.
It felt like it would be irresponsible & misleading to not produce a ?dissenting voice? to her story.

Q: What troubles ? logistical, legal, ethical ? did you encounter in commencing production?

A: Logistically, we were shooting Los Angeles for Canada, which is a exchange since generally it?s the else path around. We did find homes which closely matched the genuine homes in St. Catherines, but we had to be careful?too practically panning around with the photographic & palm tree trees
would be visible. And blooad tile roofs, stuff like that. We conveived originally that we would go up & shoot numerous 2nd unit in Canada?but after the filming was total & we had been editing for awhile, it began to seem less substantial since the tale is so practically about this kind of hermetically varnished world in which these 2 folks live. It almost felt like attempt to bring in ?local color? from Canada would
just deceive matters, preferably than enlarge value.

Legally, there were a count of issues. The most substantial one, & the one that impacts the tale the most, is that we might not depict anyone in the Homolka fellowship else than Karla, a convicted felon, & Tammy, who is deceased. That posed troubles but we worked through it, without, I think, compromising the story.

Ethically, it was a subject of constantly remembering, & reminding everybody on the show, that this is not a thriller, this very happened. We felt that this imposed a very strict burden on us to be accurate. No flights of fancy?just attempt to say the fact as we realized it.
And that involves a lot more than the bare facts of the story. The bare facts?this happened, & then this happened, & then this happened?are meaningless unless we are capable to provide insight into the ?why? of these things. Why did Karla let Paul speak her into the
rape of Tammy? Why did she stay with him? Why, when he brought Leslie Mahaffey home, did she join him? Why did she go out on the street & aid him abduct Kristin French? Why did she at last turn on him? The film tries, to the very best of our ability, to deliver meaningful insight into these questions. We felt that, ethically, the film would only have value whenever it did this?that we only had a right to make it whenever we were doing our best to shed airy on these questions.

Q: Among the views that seem to have transfixed the media & the common with this subject are how ordinary, attractive & wholesome Karla Homolka & Paul Bernardo seemed. How did you approach casting these ?couple-next-door? killers?

A: In a way, it would have been practically easier to cast a ?killer couple? who were in numerous path overtly creepy. Finding folks to play that kind of role is relatively easy. But we had to find players who might be convincing?as Paul & Karla were?as ?regular, normal? people, & who might as well be convincing as the killers that they in the finish became. I had recognized Misha Collins from his previous labor & phoned for him to read
for the section ? which he did, by with 100s of others. In the end, he was the hands-down option purely based on the deserve of his audition. Laura Prepon was different story. I do not conveive any of us would have conveived of red-headed Donna from ?That 70?s Show? as the option for Karla ? but her director watched the book & sent it to her, & she liked it & came in to read for it. As shortly as she came in & we talked, then
read a tiny bit, I recognized we had our Karla. She had a tremendous grab of the nature & an power to bring out all sides of Karla.

Q: Some appendages of the Canadian government have phoned for a censor or boycott of the film. Your response?

A: The Canadian government, especially the Ontario government, are viewed by numerous as having dropped the ball in the subject of achieving justice in this situation, & they distinctly have a deeply felt (and politically understandable) need to exhibit proceeded interest & vigilance. I am not a Canadian so I do not very need to commentary on what crosses the course between valid vigilance & intrusive ?big brother?-ness. That?s for Canadians to sort out. But I do comprehend wherever they are coming from. My only genuine complaint is that they made these calls without
having seen the film ? or without even having read any valid reviews of the film. I would note that all of these calls that you are referring to happened earlier any of the reviews came out. Since the premier reviews did seem in August ? there have been no more such calls from government figures, & the families have as well publicly stated that although they do not endorse any motion picture about the crimes, they will not
oppose the acquittance of this one.

Q: You have stated ? to paraphrase ? that this film is not a referendum on Karla?s guilt or innocence, but preferably an exploration of her character.
Could you kindly elaborate?

A: I conveive there might be a inclination in Canada for people, when conceiving Karla, to be overwhelmed by the belief of what she became?Paul?s killer accomplice?and to blank out that this is, indeed, what she became?not what she was when they met. When they met, he was already the Scarborough rapist but she did not recognize that, & she was a high school senior with no history of illegal actions whatsoever. So how did this girl, a high school senior from a responsible, working family, autumn in with Paul, & how & wherefore did she make one decisiveness after different that took her down a very darkish road. We very felt that exploring that journey, preferably than overtly judging Karla, was what the tale was about. Everyone, even killers, have a point of view. They don?t? start out as killers?they become killers. It is this ?becoming? section of it that fascinated me. It seemed to me at the time we were learning & composeing the story, that Karla began from what was for her a ?normal? place, then made once decisiveness after another, every one of which producted a ?new normal?, & which made it easier for the next bad decisiveness to happen. If you appear at it in totality it?s incomprehensible ?but whenever you burst it down into every step, every decisiveness ? then we, the film-makers, have a opportunity to deliver meaningful insight about it. That?s our business ? to deliver meaningful insight. Audiences will estimate KARLA, the film, but I very think they will do so, after seeing it, from a situation of practically bigger realizing of the
factors involved as a result of having seen the movie.

German accused of pyramid scheme fraud arrested in Las Vegas

(Reuters) - A German man accused of using an Internet pyramid scheme to bilk investors of over $100 million dollars and then going on the run for five years has been arrested in Las Vegas, a U.S. official said on Sunday.

Ulrich Felix Anton Engler, 51, was arrested on Wednesday for violating U.S. immigration law, said Nicole Navas, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Engler is wanted by German authorities on multiple criminal charges after allegedly defrauding several thousand German, Swiss and Austrian investors. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.

Engler is accused of using a Florida-based marketing company from June 2003 to June 2004 to promote another company which falsely claimed it traded in stocks and other securities to lure investors who lost access to their money once it was transferred to the United States.

An international arrest warrant was issued for him in 2007, but his whereabouts were unknown.

Last year, authorities began to re-examine his case and determined he was running a similar scheme in Nevada under a new name.

Engler is in custody of immigration officials and will be deported and turned over to German law enforcement authorities, Navas said.

Title-less But in a Relationship? A Black Woman Held Hostage ...

?We?re together, but we?decided not to put a title on our relationship.? The words, barely audible, came from my best friend?s mouth as if she?d just sold her common sense in exchange for love and a warm body between her bed sheets. What?s a best friend like me to do when I face the same vulnerabilities of??going through the motions of investing love, quality time, energy, and emotions, all without the very basic relationship fundamental: a relationship title.??So I did what any best friend would do; I listened and remained nonjudgmental. I listened as she told me she met his child and his child?s mother and how she was emotionally growing closer to her man. I listened as she told me she was always introduced to his friends and family only by her first name. I listened as she tried to make logic out of being in an exclusive relationship without having the title of being in a relationship.

While I listened, I also heard her pain, her silent cry of wanting more. One would think it would be easy to define a relationship ? simply communicate with your partner your needs and requirements. Sounds easy, until you?re in the situation, that is ? a situation where you?re getting the quality time, bonding, attention, and consistency you want from a man. The saying goes ?the heart wants what the heart wants.? In this case, it wants love, care, attention, affection, and companionship, but neglecting to put a title on a relationship does the heart a great injustice.

If love is a battlefield, then being in a relationship without a title is like being on the battlefield without armor. Defining a relationship is the very least one can do to avoid heartache. You can?t control how the relationship goes or grows, but putting a title on it solidifies you?re in a dual situation, where both individuals are held accountable to uphold the relationship. Title-less is no way to maintain a healthy relationship. It all boils down to whether or not you are claimed. There are those (male and female) who opt out of using titles because of underlying commitment issues, and then there are those who find not using a title takes pressure off the relationship, which, in other words, is?sex with no strings attached. If you?ve lived long enough, you know sex without personal investment can be emotional suicide.

All too often black women in search of love find themselves in an undefined relationship. Could it be the nagging relationship statistics creating the theory that there are not enough black men to go around? Could it be being single for so long creates a bottomless void of loneliness? Could it be unresolved insecurities keeping my best friend held hostage by an undefined relationship? Regardless of the reasons, my best friend, like any woman in a relationship, deserves a title. Don?t be held hostage. Define your relationship, Clutchettes.

Have you ever opted out of having a relationship title? How did it turn out for you?

Business Ethics: Where's Your Line?

In the world of business especially where advertising is concerned, the topic of ethics tends to come up a fair bit. As such, I find it really important to have to a kind of unofficial checks and balances system mentally in place you can refer to when faced with business decisions that could potentially endanger your personal code of ethics?

Friday's Faith - Come, Sweet Comforter - Mother Grieving Loss of Child

Friday's Faith

Come, Sweet Comforter

Could it be Your will as it was for Your Son...

"To crush (me) and cause (me) to suffer"

Under the weight of this burden of grief

After losing my child, my little one?

And though not the death, but the number of days,

That were set for my child, my precious one~

Could these be a part of Your Heavenly ways?

If this be Your path, if t'were Your path, then I dare not shun...

But God, how to live with this heavy heart

That grieves every day since she did depart~

How do I live, even though I die

When the life was cut down of "the apple of my eye"?

Only You ~Divine Creator~ can create a path

Through these ruins that lie beneath Death's crater;

For it seems this darkness threatens to overtake,

Living in this, The Shadow, of the Vile One's wrath.

"Even the darkness is not dark to You

As the night will shine like the day

For darkness is as light to You."

I look to You Lord, to light up my way,

Sprinkled with Grace as though refined by fire

As I walk everyday in the muck of Death's mire,

For it's only in the crucible that You meet us in the fire,

And in the crucible of the Crucifix, only You can show the way...

Come to me Lord; hold me close to Your heart,

For my heart forever breaks since my baby did part...

Come, sweet Comforter, come ~Please come~

Hold me in Your arms; take me safely through the Shadow,

Guide me all the way Home.

~~~~~
Isaiah 53:10 NIV
Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes His life a guilt offering, He will see His offspring and prolong His days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in His hand.
Psalm 139:15-16 NIV
My frame was not hidden from You
when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,
Your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me
were written in Your book
before one of them came to be.
Psalm 139:11-12 NIV
If I say, ?Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,?
even the darkness will not be dark to You;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to You.
For thus saith the Lord of hosts: After the glory he hath sent me to the nations that have robbed you: for he that toucheth you, toucheth the apple of my eye:
Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings...
Isaiah 40:11b NIV
Golf clubs are the most important golf equipment needed for the game however there is some other equipment that is either necessary or helpful in playing the game. Put your name on your items so that in case they get lost on the course you can claim them later. Here is a look at what other equipment you will need.
Golf Balls - Golf balls come in many different types. They are sold in packages of three or boxes of 12. For beginners it's best to choose a standard type ball. You should carry enough balls in your golf bag to last all 18 holes. At least 6 balls should be brought with. Never play with range balls - these are balls that are sold for practice. They aren't reliable and you won't get the flight you need from them. Choose standard white for normal daytime play.
Golf Bag - There are several styles of golf bags to consider. For beginners, a general all around golf bag will do. There are bags made specifically for use with golf cars as well as lightweight and smaller bags designed for carrying on the course. For travel there are specialty bags with hard covers or casings. Whichever style you choose make sure that your bag has several pockets with enough room to hold balls, tees and any other small items needed.
Golf Cart - Used to pull your bag on walking courses, the golf cart has wheels as well as a tripod for standing. These are typically made of aluminum or another lightweight yet heavy-duty material. Some golf bags come with built-in wheels, which are useful if you walk on your regular course. Check the weight of the cart or bag before you purchase it.
Tees - Tees come in wood or plastic and are used only when hitting off of the tee on the first stroke of each hole. Wooden tees are generally better. They will break under normal use so always carry at least 18 or more with you. These are quite inexpensive. The best ones are made of basic wood and come in bags of 10 or 20.
Golf Glove - Worn on the left hand for right-handed golfers, the glove makes gripping the club more comfortable and stable. The glove should fit tightly. You'll need to purchase a new glove about every year or more often if it gets wet or dirty. The glove should fit properly so that it doesn't inhibit the use of your hand.
Golf Shoes - Golf shoes have special spikes on the bottom that help you grip the ground for a good swing. These used to be metal, however, nowadays most courses only allow rubber cleats. Choose shoes that fit well with socks and that are made of leather so they will allow the feet to breathe. Lightweight shoes are more comfortable after a long day on the course.
Ball Marker - The ball marker is used to keep the place of your ball on the green when your ball may be in the way of other players. It is usually a small, flat metal chip that may come in shapes, designs or colors. Keep one handy for use when putting.
Towel - Get a specially designed golf towel to hang on your golf bag. You can use it to clean clubs or dry your hands while playing. They come with a special attached ring so they can clip to the golf bag. Keep a spare towel in your bag in case of rain.
How Working with an Outsourcing Agency Can Benefit Your Online ...
Friday, July 27th, 2012 at 9:57 am ?
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
Running an online marketing business is pretty much a full time job and one of the biggest benefits of working with an outsourcing agency is that they can save you a great deal of time. They are already set up with a group of people who work as outsourcers, people that they have tried and tested and who have proven that they are capable of handling the assignment and also who among the group is available and can complete the task in the time frame that is required.?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Another great advantage of working with an outsourcing agency is that you will only have one point of contact to manage all the projects that you choose to outsource. This can make a huge difference in the amount of time that you are likely to spend emailing back and forth when setting the project up, as you will simply need to direct your comments and queries to just one person.
There are also some reasons why you may prefer working with independent freelancers and here are some of them.
The first point is that with an independent freelancer there is no middleman so it could be less expensive. Working through an outsourcing agency you will be paying for the freelancer as well as an agency markup fee. The reason that you have to pay a fee for their services is that they have done all the ground work for you by finding and screening the people you are using to do the required marketing tasks for your online business. It is possible that you could still spend the same amount of money or even more when you outsource directly with a freelancer, but you could be getting a better quality of freelancer for the extra cost, by cutting out the middleman.
When you work directly with an independent freelancer the biggest benefit is that you can speak directly to them and although you may not have a central point of contact as you would if you were working through an agency, you have the advantage of ensuring that there is nothing lost in translation when you ask for particular modifications or changes or when it comes to providing the initial project guidelines.
For the majority of people marketing their businesses online, it will always be necessary for them to outsource certain aspects and tasks. The question that each person needs to ask themselves is whether they would be better off working with an outsourcing agency or if they would be more comfortable working with an independent freelancer.
Both of these options have their own benefits and possible drawbacks and it really is a matter of personal preference. Generally speaking, if you are good at interviewing and you are able to screen each freelancer effectively then saving the extra money that an agency would cost you may be well worth it. If on the other hand you are looking for a more hands free solution for the tasks you want to outsource, then it is worth paying the fee to an outsourcing agency as their service will allow you a lot more freedom and time for other things that you want or need to do for your online business.
Fifty Shades of?Leadership? | Evolutionaries Book | Be Evolutionary
fifty shades of grey fifty shades of leadershipThe success of E. L. James trilogy Fifty Shades of Grey is so significant that some are saying that we will see a mini-baby boom as a result of the erotically charged prose. Women who weren?t planning on another child are reporting ?Grey babies.? More than 350,000 people have offered up ?Likes? on Facebook. Hotels have replaced the Gideon Bible with copies of Fifty Shades. Adult stores are seeing a boom in sales for the, uh, ?gear? that finds use in the books. Songs mentioned in Fifty Shades are finding their way on to iPods. This success means that we will be seeing and hearing a lot more about ?Fifty Shades? as sequels, copy-cats, and the inevitable movies roll out.
Why is ?Fifty Shades? Popular?
So what is the deal about this trilogy in particular? Romance and erotic fiction is nothing new. The books are first efforts from the British TV producer, and frankly they read that way. The plot, such as it is, is not remarkable. I could go on, but my point is not to criticize the books; there are hundreds of blog posts that do a fine job of roasting the literary merit of ?Fifty Shades.?
My point is that E.L. James is enjoying a runaway hit because these books reflect two critical communication dynamics that are rarely called out so explicitly (pardon the pun). ?Fifty Shades? is crazy-popular not because women and men are sex-starved deviants. ?Fifty Shades? is crazy-popular because it is a compelling example of intentional, direct communication.
The two main characters Christian and Ana form their relationship in the first book through a series of ?on the record? conversations?and even formal contracts. The conversations that normally start love relationships are usually rife with hidden signals. Wants and attractions are usually only hinted at, implied, or ?understood? as a shared cultural norm. There is very little subtext in ?Fifty Shades.? Even these very personal, typically private conversation themes are discussed in detail in the light of day. What makes the dialogue powerful is that these explicit, on the record conversations are directly connected to an articulate inner-dialogue within our narrator, a fresh college graduate named Ana. Her narrative point of view lets us in on the mix of emotions and tensions that always orbit around their individual and shared motives. She is constantly looking at all the angles?and acting directly (and boldly) on her judgments. This connection between a very explicit level of intrapersonal communication and interpersonal communication is compelling. It is all ?out there.? ?Anyone who has been in a relationship for more than a few days has experienced the exasperation of wondering ?why doesn?t he/she get it?? ?What I want is so obvious!?
fifty shades of grey fifty shades of leadershipIn ?Fifty Shades? we see two people actively and unambiguously negotiating to meet their individual and shared desires. I admit it made me think, ?Well maybe I ought to just say what I think.? Sounds easy, but disclosure is always difficult?and our motives for the disclosure can vary widely. Academic research in self-disclosure tells us that when we do tell another person something personal, it may be for impression formation?or it might be for social control and manipulation. And there are gender differences in reasons for disclosure. For men the number one reason to disclose is catharsis?literally to get it off of their chest. For women it is relationship maintenance and enhancement. The point is that ?Fifty Shades? seems to demonstrate how much people can do when they actually talk?directly and honestly?with one another. They kind of kick the door in on relationship disclosures. It is inspiring in a crazy way.
fifty shades of grey fifty shades of leadershipWhat?s more, we see the main characters spending a lot of time debriefing and offering guidance about the best way to communicate in their relationship (and do other things). This is called ?meta-communication.? It is always interesting when people take the time to actively consider what elements in their communications, behaviors, and assumptions are working?and which ones are not. When I see a team debriefing a meeting, or when leaders actively consider the right word choices and approaches to bring news or directions to their teams, I know that excellence is possible. Meta ?communication is the act of learning together. And there is a lot of, er um, learning in ?Fifty Shades.? The main point here is that where there is success there is active meta-communication.
So, yes, ?Fifty Shades? is clearly a naughty pulp distraction?but there are key communication examples that mean business:
  1. Being actively reflective about what motives are in play (for you and the other parties) when you are communicating
  2. Giving permission to be very direct and ?on the record? about what is important, needed, off limits etc.
  3. Communicating directly about how successful, accurate, helpful your communication behaviors are for all involved
No I am not suggesting ?Fifty Shades? for your next management reading group. I am simply saying that the interpersonal communication elements of ?Fifty Shades??are as tantalizing as the prurient subject matter. The idea of being able to communicate with such force and candor is very compelling. ?I believe that Christian and Ana?s example is hitting a strong chord because we are seeing that (a) with communication we can handle most problems and (b) we are in control of our communication. We just need to pay attention.
fifty shades of grey fifty shades of leadership
In our book Evolutionaries: Transformational Leadership, Carmen Voilleque and I identify the very specific communication behaviors that great leaders use every day. At the core of their success is a sense of ?open motives? and transparency. The result is trust, vision, and real power to make changes, to make things better.
And yes, I am strongly, on the record, suggesting that you read Evolutionaries: Transformational Leadership as a part of your management reading group. If you don?t have a management reading group, start one, right away. You will gain ever so much sophistication and communication prowess.
Save ?Fifty Shades? for the beach trip.
Portland area's nonprofit health providers find room for expansion ...
Daylight streams through prominent windows into patient rooms at the new Randall Children's Hospital in Northeast Portland.
All rooms are private and fitted with extra space and furnishings for family to sleep over. One floor flows out to a terrace garden where young patients can escape to play and relax with family and friends. Every patient floor features a spacious common area with warm woodwork, soft carpets, soothing artwork and floor-to-ceiling windows to make families feel less hospital-bound.
Despite the financial uncertainty hospitals find themselves in, nonprofit health systems in Portland continue to find ways to finance ambitious capital projects. Legacy Health is spending $245 million on the children's hospital project. Oregon Health & Science University has committed $92 million in institutional funding to building a new office tower on the South Waterfront. Kaiser Permanente has a $344 million hospital under construction in Hillsboro.
Randall Children's Hospital
Location: 2801 N. Gantenbein Ave., Portland
The project: A 334,000 square-foot, nine-story tower with 165 beds, four times the size of the original children's hospital at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center.
Opening date: February 2012
Budget: $245 million, including a renovation of the emergency department at Emanuel. Legacy raised $150 million by selling bonds in 2009 that must be repaid over 20 years. The Robert D. and Marcia H. Randall Charitable Trust donated $10 million last September. Other donors total about $30 million. Legacy expects to use cash reserves to cover the balance.
Future income is one of the biggest uncertainties. Oregon hospital revenues haven't fully bounced back from the plunge they took during the depths of the recession. Since 2008, credit rating firms have been busy downgrading nonprofit hospitals, and the outlook for nonprofit hospitals this year remains negative.
For income, most hospitals rely heavily on the federal Medicare program for retirees, and Medicaid, the state and federal entitlement program that covers medical costs for low-income children and pregnant women. Oregon and other states have cut Medicaid payments by hundreds of millions of dollars and are under pressure to cut even more. Health reform efforts by state and federal lawmakers are supposed to shift money toward primary care and away from inpatient medical centers.
"It's a huge challenge," says Susan Mullaney, administrator for hospitals at Kaiser Permanente Northwest, which plans to open the new Hillsboro hospital next year. "The bottom line is, our population is aging. More people are going to need hospital care. We need to be able to provide a top-rate facility for them. We have to do this."
To maintain operating margins, some health systems are laying off workers even as they invest in construction. Legacy Health in December said it would eliminate up to 400 jobs.
Providence Health & Services, which cut 85 positions last year, has imposed a freeze on capital projects.
"Unless it is critical to our patients' health or safety, we are not moving forward with any," says Shelly Handkins, Providence chief financial officer for the Oregon region. "For the next year, I expect us to stay on that path."
The biggest challenge, Handkins says, is the flat or declining federal reimbursements. Hospitals used to cover shortfalls from Medicare and Medicaid by raising prices charged to commercial health insurers and employer groups. Now, Handkins says, "The commercial market can't afford any kind of significant increase. We've got to get our cost structure down."
Those that continue to build say they need to replace crowded, obsolete hospitals.
"Hospitals are designed a lot differently these days," Mullaney says. "We've got to keep pace with that."
Studies have raised concerns about older hospitals' confusing layouts, noise and lack of privacy. For instance, infection risk is lower when patients are given private rooms rather than sharing quarters.
Competition is another driving factor. And some health policy experts worry the competition drives hospitals to build more capacity than needed. Studies suggest excess hospital capacity can drive up spending on services without improving health.
Mullaney says the number of Portland-area people enrolled in Kaiser Permanente health plans has grown too large to be served by a single hospital, Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center in Clackamas.
Dr. Molly Burchell, clinical vice president for Legacy Health, says population growth and patient needs have created enough demand to keep Randall Children's Hospital busy along with Doernbecher Children's Hospital at OHSU. She says the two children's hospitals are often full or near capacity.
Oregon Health & Science University Collaborative Life Sciences Building
Location: South Waterfront
Opening date: 2013
The project: 500,000-square-foot building in collaboration with Oregon State University and Portland State University with space for education, research, offices for health professionals, retail, food service and parking.
Budget: $160 million will be funded through $110 million in state bonds, an anonymous $40 million gift, $10 million in TriMet support for a new transit station, and with OHSU assuming debt servicing for $30 million of the state-issued bonds. $135 million will be funded by $43 million in philanthropic fundraising by OHSU and $92 million in OHSU institutional funding.
Legacy raised $150 million for its latest round of construction and renovation by selling bonds in 2009 that must be repaid over 20 years. But like other hospitals, it has also found many willing donors.
The Robert D. and Marcia H. Randall Charitable Trust donated $10 million last September. The company expects to raise $30 million for other donors. Legacy expects to use its cash reserves to cover the balance.
An anonymous donor gave $40 million to OHSU, and the university expects to raise $43 million from other donations to help pay for the Collaborative Life Sciences Building on the South Waterfront. The project is also supported by $110 million in state bonds. OHSU plans to spend $92 million from its own reserves.
Nonprofit health systems often have considerable cash available for capital projects. Kaiser Permanente is using internal reserves to cover the entire $349 million cost of the hospital in Hillsboro. The company began planning and budgeting for the hospital in 2005, years before the prolonged economic downturn.
"We don't have to borrow money or issue bonds," Mullaney says. "We're staying the course on this one. Financially, we are still in a stable position to do so."
--Joe Rojas-Burke
Kaiser Permanente Westside Medical Center
Location: Tanasbourne district of Hillsboro
The project: 421,000-square-foot hospital with 126 private rooms and capacity to expand to 240 rooms; eight operating rooms; an emergency department with 27 treatment rooms; 60 physician offices with 90 exam rooms; a multilevel parking garage for 900 vehicles.
Opening date: August 2013.
Budget: $344 million, covered entirely by the company's financial reserves.
Study assessed predictors for more than 1,000 high-risk participants
PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] In the powerful sunlight of July, newly published results from a large study of people at high risk for basal cell carcinoma support the emerging view of the nation's most common cancer as a chronic ailment that often repeatedly afflicts older people but for which the seeds may be planted in youth. The research also found a new association with eczema.
"Basal cell carcinoma is a chronic disease once people have had multiple instances of it, because they are always at risk of getting more," said Dr. Martin Weinstock, professor of dermatology in the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, who practices at the Providence Veterans Affairs Medical Center. "It's not something at the moment we can cure. It's something that we need to monitor continually so that when these cancers crop up we can minimize the damage."
Dermatologists hold out hope for a medication that will help prevent recurrences of BCC. To test one such medicine, Weinstock chaired the six-site, six-year VA Topical Tretinoin Chemoprevential Trial, which last year found that the skin medication failed to prevent further instances of BCC in high-risk patients.
Weinstock is the corresponding author of the new study, published online July 19 in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, which presents an analysis of the risk predictors of BCC recurrence found among the trial's population of 1,131 people, all of whom were veterans, 97 percent of whom were men, and whose median age was 72. On average, a participant had more than three episodes of BCC or squamous cell carcinoma before entering the study.
History, eczema, and early exposure
Overall, 44 percent of study participants developed new BCCs during the study period. The biggest predictor of another bout with BCC after three to four years of follow-up was a prior history of them. The 129 participants who had more than five BCCs in the five years before the study had a hazard rate ratio that was nearly four times as high as that of the 204 people who had none or one and more than twice as high that of the 200 people who had three.
Eczema was another predictor of BCC recurrence in the study's high-risk group. Participants who acknowledged a family history of the skin condition had a hazard rate ratio 1.54 times higher than people who did not, after statistical adjustments.
"We don't know why this is," Weinstock said. "The connection with eczema is something that's new, that needs to be further explored."
Age was another predictor, and not just in providing further confirmation that the risk people face increases with age. The study also showed that particularly intense sun exposure before the age of 30 was a strong a predictor of BCC occurrence among the high-risk study population, even though for most of them their 30s were decades ago.
"We talk about sun protection, which is important, but that's something for basal cell that's most important in your youth," Weinstock said. "While we don't exonerate UV exposure in one's 40s, 50s, and 60s, it was particularly UV exposure before the age of 30 that was most closely related to BCC in our study."
Awaiting a new trial
If limiting UV exposure is most crucial before the age of 30, what can doctors do for older people who may be headed for multiple bouts with BCC?
"Right now we have this wait and cut approach," he said. "We know these people are at high risk and we know that most of them are going to get more."
A better solution comes back to finding and testing preventive medication. Tretinoin didn't work, but Weinstock said he and his colleagues are testing another called 5-Fluorouracil. He said he is optimistic but has not yet seen the data from a trial that began about three years ago.
###
Robert Dyer of the Providence VA Medical Center and Brown University was the study's lead author. In addition to Dyer and Weinstock, other authors on the paper are Tobias Cohen, Amilcar Rizzo, Stephen Brigham and the VATTC Trial Group.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Co-operative Studies Program funded the research.
PFT: Jones-Drew will be a no-show at camp
Bounties Vilma FootballAP
As Jonathan Vilma marches into a Louisiana courtroom in the hopes of being able very soon to march onto the field with the rest of the Saints, he will bring with him eight potential witnesses.
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Vilma plans to call interim head coach Joe Vitt and current/former teammates Scott Shanle, Jonathan Casillas, Roman Harper, Sedrick Ellis, Troy Evans, and Randall Gay.
We?re told that Darren Sharper also could be a late addition, if he can get to court in time.
Not on the list is Drew Brees, who has submitted an affidavit in support of Vilam?s effort to lift his suspension while the lawsuit challenging the one-year ban proceeds.
Also not on the list but submitting an affidavit is Pierson Prioleau, who played with the Saints from 2009 through 2011 and with three other teams coached by former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.? Prioleau explains that Williams? pre-game rantings ?were exactly the same for every team.?? Prioleau says the players regarded the tough talk as a motivational speech, and that the players ?were always reminded to never hurt the team with illegal or selfish play.?
?I?ve never seen anyone rewarded for any illegal action or for injuring another player,? Prioleau says.
Prioleau?s affidavit doesn?t mention whether Williams used a pay-for-performance system that rewarded players for rendering opponents unable to continue via good, clean, legal hits.
Vilma also plans to introduce more than 20 exhibits, consisting of among other things portions of the league?s investigation file and letters exchanged regarding the suspension and Vilma?s decision not to meet with Commissioner Roger Goodell before or after the suspension was imposed.
Whether Vilma is likely to eventually win the war is one of the factors that Judge Helen G. Berrigan will consider in deciding the outcome of this key battle.? Others include whether he?ll suffer ?irreparable harm? if he?s suspended now and later wins the case, and whether more damage will be done to Vilma with the suspension kept in place or to the NFL with the suspension lifted.? Also, the ?public interest? is a common, but often nebulous, factor in efforts of this nature.
The StarCaps litigation resulted in the a court blocking multiple suspensions until the litigation was resolved.? In that case, the ?irreparable harm? factor drove the outcome.? It could, in this case, be the determining factor, too.
Judge Berrigan could rule on the motion at the hearing, or she could take the matter under advisement and rule later.? Either way, time is of the essence; Vilma can?t participate in any practices or preseason games unless and until the suspension is lifted.
New paint could help soldiers clean up after chemical attacks
Paint absorbs harmful chemicals and can be easily scrubbed off of vehicles
The possible use of chemical weapons in war is something no one in the military wants to think about, but if the worst does happens they need effective ways to deal with the fallout. Troops can remove their uniforms and be scrubbed down with hydrogen peroxide fairly easily, but what about their vehicles and other gear? That's where a unique new type of paint comes in.
Developed jointly by the U.K.'s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) and AzkoNobel, the paint contains silica gel that absorbs chemicals and traps them. It's sprayed onto vehicles on top of a sticky coating described as being like the adhesive on a Post-It Note. This allows the paint to be easily scrubbed off after it's done its job.
The paint is expected to be used on the British Army's Warrior tanks initially, but could theoretically be used on other vehicles and equipment. Now that it's been perfected, the next step in the development of this unique paint is to create one that can change colors to alert soldiers in the event of a chemical attack. That way, they can take shelter and will be able to quickly tell which vehicles or areas are unsafe to approach.
The most effective way to teach students the value of monetary management is to educate them on the differences between good debt and bad debt. Good debt includes investments that increase in value over time while bad debts are factors that can result in poor credit rating such as neglecting to make timely payments on their balances.
The fact is, being consistent in terms of timely payments is essential in building credit because future employers and/or lenders checks an individual?s credit history and base their decision to grant loans or student credit cards on the person?s reliability and accountability.
While college students cards are used to provide extra financial resources for everyday expenses, it should only be used during responsibly. This is why it is imperative to stress that cards are only to be used during emergencies to avoid overspending. The good news is, few credit cards for students offer limits over $ 1,000 so this makes it much easier for them to use the card wisely.
Include a category for card purchases in their budget plan and teach them how to set aside money for their card bills in order to pay off any outstanding balances on time. Fortunately, many college students cards come with features that make it easier to manage finances and budgeting.
Once they learn how to take care of their finances, you can help them start comparing the best card deals. There are a vast number of offers online and offline and it is up to you to determine which of these offers are actually worth looking into.
Ideally, you need to look for a card that offers flexible terms and reasonable finance charges. Before you come down to a decision, make sure that you compare all the various aspects of cards such as the rates, the annual fees, the terms, conditions, and additional charges that will apply. Create a list and narrow down your search until you are able to select which card is the most suitable one.
