For decades, they have been two of the world's most reclusive nations.

Myanmar, run by a cabal of generals, squelched any attempt at democratic change and kept the country's most popular figure under strict house arrest for years.

North Korea, run by the same family as a Stalinist dictatorship since the 1940s, simply sealed itself off. Outsiders were rarely allowed to visit, tourists were long unknown and the only way ordinary people could escape the country's extreme poverty and political repression was to steal across the border into China.

But in very different ways, the two nations have opened themselves up over the past year or so, allowing the world to peer behind the political curtains they had so laboriously erected.

Both now have foreign journalists arriving in unprecedented numbers (though the visits are tightly restricted in North Korea). Both have had observers predicting momentous changes. Both governments have insisted ? repeatedly ? that they are working to improve the lives of their citizens.

But how much change has there been? That's more complicated.

The question is debated relentlessly in Myanmar, asked by everyone from wealthy businessmen with military connections to pro-democracy political activists. Though skeptics abound, "hope" has become the country's political watchword.

But for observers of North Korea, the answer is far more definitive, and far less optimistic.

"None," said Andrei Lankov, a scholar on the North at Seoul's Kookmin University, when asked if he had seen signs of significant change since the December death of longtime ruler Kim Jong Il, and the rise to power of his young son. In his opinion: "The young dictator is still controlled and surrounded by the old guard, the same people who for many years formulated and executed his father's polices, so it is too early to expect any noticeable change."

Less than two years ago, though, similar talk was common in Yangon, Myanmar's capital, when a November 2010 national election was widely dismissed as a political sham stage-managed by the generals. Only in recent months has that pessimism begun to lift.

"We are now seeing some changes we didn't expect," said Yin Sein, a 59-year old high school teacher in Yangon.

First, hundreds of political prisoners were freed ? more than 650 in the past year. Then, in April, the opposition party led by Aung San Suu Kyi won a landslide victory in historic by-elections. Suu Kyi, the Nobel Peace Prize-winner who had spent more than 15 years under house arrest, now sits in Parliament.

Today, little feels repressive about Myanmar. Unlike Pyongyang, a funereal town which basically shuts down at nightfall, Yangon has long been a city of neighborhood bars, sprawling markets and storefront restaurants with plastic tables on the sidewalk.

Now, with the end of military rule, even protests have come into the open, as people test their newfound freedoms.

Every night this past week, 100 people or so have gathered at the Sule Pagoda, a major Buddhist shrine in central Yangon, to vent their anger about the rolling electrical blackouts that plague the city. Hundreds more people come simply to watch.

Two years ago, such a protest almost certainly would have been met with tear gas, baton-wielding policemen and trips to jail. Today, the police watch calmly from a distance, and after a few hours they politely ask everyone to leave.

But things are seldom clear in Myanmar, once known as Burma. The generals, some of whom grew immensely rich during decades of military rule, still wield great power over Myanmar's politics. Old laws remain in place that would enable them ? if they felt threatened, or believed democratization was moving too quickly ? to once again seize complete power.

Myanmar has become a country of political contradictions, a place where local officials no longer stage middle-of-the-night checks to look for unregistered visitors in private homes, but where many people register their guests with the authorities anyway. The laws requiring registration, after all, are still on the books.

It's a country where restrictions have been lifted on long-oppressed political parties, but where many people are still too afraid to talk about politics on the telephone.

"We are not sure what is underneath this veneer of change and how sustainable these changes are," Yin Sein said.

Even Suu Kyi warns against the dangers of undue optimism.

"We are at a point in history when there is a possibility for transition, but I do not think we can take it for granted that this transition will come about," she told reporters recently.

"I sometimes feel that people are too optimistic about the scene in Burma," she told a conference in Washington D.C., speaking on a video link.

But if the people of Myanmar have learned the art of pessimism through decades of military rule, the people of North Korea have learned they shouldn't even contemplate change ? at least not publicly.

North Koreans have spent years in prison for questioning the legitimacy of the Kim family: Founding ruler Kim Il Sung, his son Kim Jong Il and now his grandson Kim Jong Un. If many observers and foreign governments had hoped that Kim Jong Il's death would pave the way for political reform, there has been little sign of change.

"If such change is to happen (and this is a big if), it will take place only after Kim Jong Un's people assume ... some independent power ? that is, in a couple of years at the fastest," Lankov said in an email.

In many ways, North Korea can appear frozen in time, with one family in power for more than 60 years, and its dreary, poverty-battered cities decorated with Soviet-style propaganda posters.

So any change can seem momentous, from the dozens of journalists allowed into North Korea in April to cover the 100th anniversary of the birth of Kim Il Sung, to the growth of its tourism industry. Some observers saw sparks of change when North Korea publicly admitted the April failure of a rocket launch it said was intended to carry a satellite into space (though much of the world insists the launch was cover for testing long-range missile technology). In January, The Associated Press opened its newest bureau in Pyongyang.

The vast majority of those outsiders, though, normally glimpse only the lives of everyday North Koreans through the windows of their tour buses. For the most part, they see only what the Pyongyang government wants them to see, whether massive rallies in support of Kim Jong Un or huge monuments that glorify his father and grandfather.

In Myanmar, journalists now travel easily across much of the country, talking to anyone from top officials to poor farmers to opposition leaders. Not so in North Korea. Visitors rarely see the cities that have almost no electricity, or the homes of people struggling with immense poverty. They rarely leave Pyongyang ? North Korea's showcase capital ? and certainly meet no political prisoners.

And while some people in Myanmar are afraid to talk politics on the telephone, few people in North Korea even have access to international phone lines.

But if few signs are seen of internal change in North Korea, it is evident people there can increasingly see the outside world.

While North Korea's government-controlled media allow little but praise for the Kim family, the spread of technology ? from inexpensive DVD players to cheap, handheld radios ? means there are now many ways for North Koreans to get around their government's media roadblocks.

Most North Koreans have no access to the Internet, but they can increasingly buy DVDs smuggled in from China. Those DVDs show everything from South Korean soap operas to recordings of foreign news broadcasts.

"In 2012, North Koreans can get more outside information, through more types of media, from more sources, than ever before," according to a recent report commissioned by the U.S. State Department and conducted by a consulting group, InterMedia. "Despite the incredibly low starting point, important changes in the information environment in North Korean society are under way."

Durant, Westbrook can't rescue Thunder in Game 2

SAN ANTONIO (AP) ? The Oklahoma City Thunder finally found a way to slow down the San Antonio Spurs. It still wasn't enough to beat them.

Tony Parker had 34 points and eight assists, Manu Ginobili added 20 points and the Spurs stayed perfect in the playoffs with a 120-111 victory in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals Tuesday night.

Kevin Durant scored 31 points, Russell Westbrook had 27 points and eight assists and James Harden rebounded from a rough Game 1 to score 30 points for the Thunder, who have lost two straight for the first time since early April. Oklahoma City dropped to 15-4 in games after losses this season.

"There are no moral victories for us," Durant said. "We were down. We dug ourselves a hole. We did what we normally do, which is fight all game, and we lost."

The Thunder trailed by as many as 22 points in the third quarter and by 16 when coach Scott Brooks resorted to intentionally fouling Spurs center Tiago Splitter, a 32 percent free-throw shooter in the playoffs entering the game.

Splitter went 5 for 10 from the line over a 54-second span before Spurs coach Gregg Popovich replaced him with Tim Duncan, and Oklahoma City trailed by the same margin ? 16 ? that it did when Brooks called for the "Hack-a-Splitter" strategy.

The Spurs seemed to lose their offensive flow after that, and the Thunder rallied in the fourth quarter.

"There's a reason why you do it, to kill the rhythm," Parker said. "I think it got us out of our rhythm."

Oklahoma City got within six points with just over 5 minutes to play. But Parker, Ginobili and Tim Duncan helped San Antonio finish off the Thunder.

Game 3 is Thursday night in Oklahoma City.

"We're upset about that loss," Durant said. "We've got to go home and regroup and watch film, see how we can get better."

The Thunder are 5-0 on their raucous home court in the playoffs. But only 14 teams in NBA playoff history have overcome 2-0 deficits to win a series, and the Spurs show no signs of letting the Thunder back in it.

"First, we've got to worry about Game 3," Westbrook said. "Regardless of what's going on with this last game or the next game, we've got to worry about Game 3 and come in with the same mindset and try to get a win."

The Spurs set an NBA record with their 20th consecutive victory bridging the regular season and the playoffs. They came in sharing the longest such streak with the 2000-01 Lakers, who won 19 straight before losing to Philadelphia in the first game of the finals.

Those Lakers went on to win the championship and Parker's performance is yet another reason to think the Spurs will do the same.

Guided by their All-Star point guard, San Antonio shredded Oklahoma City's defense with pinpoint passes for three quarters. The Spurs were shooting 63 percent from the field and 64 percent from 3-point range at one point in the third quarter.

Parker went 16 for 21 from the field, including a 3-pointer.

"Tony's been great all year," Popovich said. "He's been really focused the entire season."

San Antonio picked up where it left off from the 39-point fourth quarter that turned Game 1 on Sunday. With sharp passes and hot shooting, the Spurs jumped to a 19-9 lead after the Thunder missed six of their first seven shots and had three turnovers in the first 4 minutes.

The Spurs shot 58 percent (22 of 38) and had 13 assists in the first half. They also cut down their turnovers, committing only six in the first half after giving away 14 in the first two quarters of Game 1.

San Antonio resumed picking apart Oklahoma City's defense with precision passes after the break, scoring on five straight possessions. The biggest cheer from the crowd came after Ginobili flipped a behind-the-back pass to Parker in the corner for another 3 and the lead ballooned to 78-58.

"We have seen what we can do when we play as a team," Harden said. "We fought hard, but it was too much of a deficit to come back (from) late in the game."

The Spurs missed 12 of 15 shots during one stretch, but Parker hit an off-balance, high-arcing jumper with 3:39 left for a 107-96 lead and San Antonio controlled the game from there.

"Our guys played hard," Brooks said. "Unfortunately, we came away with nothing the last few days."

Pebble Blue Samsung Galaxy S III launch might be delayed, faulty battery cover could be to blame

Although there has been no word (yet) about the Australian launch of the Galaxy S III ? we?ve seen a few things, however ? there could be a global delay of the ?Pebble Blue? Samsung Galaxy S III. For those playing along at home, we?re simply referring to the blue version of the Galaxy S III that?s meant to look more like a pebble.

There has been no confirmation from Samsung about the delay, however, multiple online retailers in Europe have sent emails to customers informing them of a delay due to Samsung cancelling shipments to suppliers. It has been reported that 600,000 Pebble Blue battery covers (back covers) had to be destroyed by Samsung because they were defective.

Another reason that has been reported is that Samsung only started production of the blue model at the start of last week, which won?t give them enough time to fulfil demand by the expected June 20th release date. Local suppliers such as Kogan and MobiCity haven?t reported any slowed shipments as of yet, but we?ll let you know should we hear anything.

Samsung Australia will surely cover the official reasons at their launch event next Friday when they layout their local launch plans for the Galaxy S III. The white version is confirmed to be arriving on time, with battery covers working as expected.

They're Still No Match For Real Estate! - Stock And Profit Investments

In the last year or so we?ve seen the real estate market tank while most other types of investments have done alright, with the exception of a recent bump in the stock market road. Still, when we compare our investment options, it?s pretty hard to dismiss real estate!

Let?s take a look at some ways small investors may be able to create wealth and see how they stack up against real estate.

The stock market

Stockbrokers, online and otherwise, allow their clients to use leverage by buying stocks on margin. This means if you want to buy $ 1,000 worth of stock, your broker will lend you $ 1,000 more so you can buy twice as much. Therefore, if your stocks double in price, they are worth $ 4,000, and since you have only $ 1,000 of your money invested and $ 1,000 belongs to your broker, you have tripled your $ 1,000 to $ 3,000! So, buying on margin makes stock market investing attractive.

Commodities futures trading

Commodity brokers allow their clients to make money by buying on margin. For about $ 1,500 you can control 5,000 bushels, or about $ 30,000 worth of soybeans. Here, if the price of the soybeans rises 10%, you make a profit of $ 3,000. Of course, it can go the other way, too, and if it does, you lose big. Still, fortunes have been made in commodities futures trading and it is a superb example of using leverage.

Multilevel marketing businesses

Another area where people can gain a large amount of leverage is through multilevel marketing. With multilevel marketing a person signs people into his down line. These people recruit and sell products for him, thus giving him the ability to make money from their time and effort.

Buying a new house

Probably, the most ubiquitous form of leverage happens when you put $ 40,000 down to buy a $ 200,000 house. Sooner or later most families make a similar investment. A mortgage allows you to control an asset that is 5 times as big as the investment you have made.

Should the price of your $ 200,000 property double, not at all an unheard of event in real estate, you will have made $ 200,000 on your $ 40,000 investment, or a return of 500%! Now that?s leverage! It?s no wonder people like to invest in real estate!

Risk vs. reward

All these examples show ways a small investor can make money, even a lot of money. However, they all come with a potential downside. Certainly, investing in stocks is a great thing to do, but the market has its ups and downs and buying on margin in the stock market isn?t normally what one thinks of as very strong leverage.

There is a lot of leverage in commodities futures trading, but there is also an abnormal amount of risk. When first trading commodities futures, the investor should use strategies, which will define the risk. These strategies include buying options, or spreads. The latter is the way Forex, which is an online investor favorite, is traded. Spread trading tends to make commodity investing a lot less volatile.Multilevel marketing isn?t recommended for everyone. Though many success stories have been written because of multilevel marketing, it is a type of business that many people never find success with.

Everybody needs a place to live

Buying a house on the other hand, is recommended for everyone, even if it is bought only to provide a place for someone to live. The price of real estate doesn?t always go up, however. In the area I live and invest in, real estate had a major slump between 1988 and 1993. In this time frame, real estate lost value drastically. Now in 2008, many parts of the country are experiencing the same phenomenon.

Buy and hold

However, anyone who bought real estate before, or better yet, during the late 80?s slump was richly rewarded if he held on. With real estate, it always seems that you?ll come out ahead and make money if you don?t give up. Though buying at the wrong time can severely slow down your ascent to wealth, experience tells us if you hold on tight, there will be a turn around sooner or later.

So far, throughout history, real estate prices have always broken sharply upwards when coming out of slumps. If you are able to weather a real estate down cycle until the market turns around, it will be well worth your perseverance because as the price climbs, you will gain the leverage you need to make a lot of money in a real hurry.

So, if you are thinking of buying, don?t let the recent downturn deter you. History tells us that buying during downturns is an excellent strategy. If you already bought and are now losing equity, take heart, though real estate prices sometimes fall, its overall direction is up. This why more fortunes have been in real estate than any other commodity.

The Tribune ? UN Review; India grilled over AFSPA, custodial torture at Geneva

Aditi Tandon, Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 25. Custodial torture, enforced disappearances and use of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act were the major concerns raised by UN member nations that grilled India yesterday when its national report for the second Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of human rights came up for discussions at Geneva.

Most country representatives asked Attorney General Ghoolam Vahanvati representing India why the government had not? ratified the UN Conventions against torture and enforced disappearances despite positive indications earlier.? Ratification of the Convention against Torture was recommended to India four years ago after its first UPR.? ?That hasn?t happened. Though the Prevention of Torture Bill 2010 was introduced in Parliament,? India?s National Human Rights Commission has in its observations on the country?s second UPR said.

?The Bill was weak. If the Act eventually adopted dilutes the revisions made by a committee of Parliament?s Upper House, it will call into question the government?s commitment to the convention,? it said. Between 2001 and 2010, NHRC reported 14,231 cases of deaths in police and prison custody (1,504 and 12,727, respectively) ? an average of 43 deaths a day.

The Working Group on Human Rights (WGHR) in India and the UN which submitted a parallel report for India?s UPR says that torture is the most widespread in India?s conflict areas and leads to physical, mental disability and impotency.? ?Common methods of torture in Kashmir and the North-East are placement of iron rod on the legs on which many people sit; placement of burning stove between the legs and administration of electric shocks to genitals. A Commission of the ICRC?? confirmed the use of torture in Kashmir,? WGHR report says.

Yesterday, India was reminded of its 2011 promise to ratify the UN Convention on Enforced Disappearances. This recommendation was made after India?s first UPR.? The NHRC report to the UN Human Rights Commission, however, says: ?There is no evidence that the Government intends to ratify the CED.

Enforced disappearance is not codified as a criminal offence in domestic law nor are extant provisions of law used to deter the practice.? The NHRC received 341 complaints of disappearance in 2010, over 400 in 2011. The WGHR report laments enforced disappearances in Kashmir.

A 36 Foot Tall Tornado Made From Plastic Bottles

Chinese artist Wang Zhiyuan has an interesting way of showing disdain for the state of garbage pollution in his hometown-he created this neat 36 foot tall tornado made out of recyclable plastic bottles and containers.

The piece is entitled Thrown To The Wind, with the funnel shape flipped over to appear as if the cloud of bottles is taking off into the sky.

You know there aren?t enough recycling programs in your town when a tornado tears through which is made almost entirely out of trash!

Whitney is going to have a whole pile of drama! Because Whitney is a dancer, thats where her and Zoey will meet first :) They will become friends and Whitney is a lot like Zoey. But when school starts zoey doesn't wanna be popular and so there is conflict.

Probate Process Oops: Allegation of Will Forgery Against AL Lawyer

Prominent lawyer?s life unravels amid claims of memory loss, allegations of will forgery

MOBILE, Alabama ? Grappling for two years with allegations of will fakery, longtime prominent Mobile area lawyer Richard Horne has withdrawn from his cases in the last few months, blaming memory loss. His memory problem is ?profound,? he wrote to a federal judge, and ?has reached the point where the representation of clients will be compromised and possibly ineffective.? Horne ? whose notable clients over the years have ranged from suspected killers to wayward mayors to the strip club Sammy?s ? also told the judge that he had contacted the Alabama State Bar seeking advice on how to close his practice. But such actions have done little to deter David Stroecker, a Mobile insurance agent who has pressed a State Bar complaint against the 66-year-old Horne over a will that Mobile County Probate Court jurors determined was forged. ?I?m going to do it. I?m going to keep going,? said Stroecker, who is the stepfather of two women who contested the will. ?He made it personal. I didn?t make it personal.? He said that he wants to make sure that Horne cannot practice law in Alabama again. Tony McLain, the bar?s general counsel, said he could not comment on the complaint because such matters are closed unless the bar decides to tak

A Quick Look At Some Graphic Design Applications (Ezine Ready)

The quality of software you use can have a great impact on your graphic design project. There are a handful of software choices available to graphic artists, and most of them are quite costly. This guide will walk you through the different kinds of graphics programs available, and what your choices are for each type of software. To help you get the most for your money, I will also show you how to obtain a printplace coupon and get bargains on print jobs.

Adobe is definitely considered the leader in providing the best design software. Probably the most famous software by Adobe is Photoshop, which can be quite expensive. The program is especially suitable for photo editing which it is perhaps most well-known for. People who design for the Web also find Photoshop to be quite useful, and many web designers use Photoshop almost exclusively. Rich in features, Photoshop offers many capabilities especially suited for Web design. For example, it allows you to save images in web optimized format, and also lets you create and export slices very easily. People who can?t afford Photoshop may consider GIMP, an open source alternative that is quite robust and touts similar features.

You will most likely also have to draw vector graphics, and this is the second kind of program you will require as a designer. Illustrator is the most notable software in this category. Illustrator is not an easy program to learn, so you may want to invest in some training resources if you get this program. It is also a rather pricey product, priceds at $599 retail. The good news is that there is an open source program called Inkscape, which can be used to do many similar things.

A program for working with layouts is the last software program that designers will need. For print design, there is InDesign, and for the Internet, there is Dreamweaver. Perhaps because I have a web background, I find print layout software to be quite difficult to learn, so expect to spend a lot of time learning how to work with them. For an open source, free program that does similar things to InDesign, make sure you check out Scribus.

It would be a waste if you developed something that is well-designed, only to get it printed by a subpar printing company. The Internet is a terrific tool for looking into different printing companies. If a printer offers samples, make sure you check them out. Also, go to sites that review printers to learn more about printing companies.

Facebook Camera for iPhone takes best of Instagram

Facebook has released a photo-sharing app called Facebook Camera. So how does it stack up with Instagram??

By Matthew Shaer / May 25, 2012

Facebook Camera, a new photo-sharing app, comes on the heels of Facebook's $1 billion acquisition of Instagram. Here, the loading screen of Facebook is seen on a range of devices.

A little over a month after Facebook acquired?photo-sharing hub?Instagram?for a?reported $1 billion, the newly-public social network has released its own mobile photo app called Facebook Camera. Camera works a whole lot like Instagram: Users can snap and share photos with a few swipes of the finger, or edit the images with a range of speciality filters.?

"When you launch the app, you'll see a feed of just great photos from the people you care about," Facebook reps wrote in a press release.?"You can swipe to see more of any album or tap to enlarge an individual photo." Facebook Camera is currently available on the iPhone; versions for Android and other mobile operating systems may follow, although Facebook is keeping mostly mum.?

So how does Facebook Camera stack up against Instagram? Well, over at Gizmodo, Sam Biddle has run a pretty comprehensive side-by-side test of both apps. Verdict: Instagram, by dint of a few added virtual filters, has a slight edge in the photo-taking department. But Facebook Camera makes uploading and sharing photographs easier, which is why most of us use an app such as Instagram or Camera in the first place.?

"So long as Facebook remains the social gold standard online it makes sense for it to be the central place for your photos," Biddle writes. He adds: "With Camera, Facebook's back to being a one stop shop. Any argument for Instagram to the contrary is just contrarianism; the urge of the cool kid to do something unconventional and away from the crowd for its own sake. It's time to give in."?

In recent months, photo and video sharing apps have soared in popularity. According to a recent report by analytics company Flurry, which tracked downloads on all the major mobile operating systems,?the photo and video apps category grew by 89 percent?between October of last year and March of this year. For the first time since the 2008 launch of the Apple App Store, Flurry reps wrote, "the?Games category found itself rivaled by another category."?

Not a bad time for Facebook to get into the game.?

2171185463 92a40441ab m Reddits Alexis Ohanian And Activists Aim To Build A Bat Signal For The InternetThe ?blackout? of Web sites to protest the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in January was an unprecedented show of Internet solidarity against bad legislation. But with new net-threatening measures like ACTA and CISPA popping out of Congress on a practically monthly basis, one online entrepreneur and a group of net activists want to enable regular SOPA-style mass protests at the push of a button.

Alexis Ohanian, the 29-year old founder of social news site Reddit, has partnered with the online advocacy group Fight for the Future to create what they?re calling the ?Internet Defense League.? Ohanian describes the project, which they plan to officially launch next month, as a ?Bat-Signal for the Internet.? Any website owner can sign up on the group?s website to add a bit of code to his or her site?or receive that code by email at the time of a certain campaign?that can be triggered in the case of a political crisis like SOPA, adding an activist call-to-action to all the sites involved, such as a widget or banner asking users to sign petitions, call lawmakers, or boycott companies.

?People who wish to be tapped can see, oh look, the Bat-Signal is up. Time to do something,? says Ohanian. ?Whatever website you own, this is a way for you to be notified if something comes up and take some basic actions? If we aggregate everyone that?s doing it, the numbers start exploding.?

The embedded code on participating sites might do more than just display a mere banner ad, says Tiffiny Cheng, co-director of Internet-focused political advocacy group Fight for the Future, and could even ?

World?s Thinnest Smartphone Now Made by Chinese Company Oppo (Video)

Last I checked the Huawei Acend P1 S was the world?s thinnest smartphone, at 6.68 mm in waistline, barely beating a Fujitsu Arrows phone, that previously held that title. And now there?s another Asian company responsible for ?the thinnest phone ever?, Oppo. You can see their device below.

We?re dealing here with an Android smartphone that?s 6.65 mm in waistline and that recently got teased by its maker. The phone is called Oppo Finder and it comes with a 1.5 GHz dual core processor, 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal memory, a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Plus display and 8 megapixel camera. The latter supports 1080p video capture and is accompanied by a 1.3 megapixel camera at the front, with 720p video capture. Insiders say that the Finder will be available for pre-order starting with June 6 and it will be priced at around $632.

I?m really curios if the Android experience on the device has been customized or not, but at least the icons have, as the pictures published on the web show. When will this rush to make the thinnest phone stop? I?m sure they?ll move entirely into a new segment of competition when the first smartphone with flexible display will launch?
