Business sales strategy: David Meerman Scott how to reach your ...

More business sales strategy fromDavid Meerman Scott, bestselling author of The New Rules of Marketing & PR, reveals how using new media gives you the advantage and a direct approach to more buyers. See more business news television shows featuring these experts, as they give their top expert business advice at www.yourbusinesschannel.com. David Meerman Scott You know its amazing to me that on the web we have a new way to market that we never really had before. Under the old rules of marketing, which is the marketing that you use probably today and everybody has used for years to reach people offline you really only have two ways to reach your buyers. You could either buy expensive advertising ? that means radio, television, newspapers, magazines, direct mail, billboards, telephone directories, and direct mail, all of those sorts of things. So you could buy expensive advertising, or you could use the media as your mouth piece by trying to beg the media to talk or write about your products and services. Those are really the only options that we use to have available to us but now weve been liberated. Weve been liberated because we have the web as a way we can publish content directly and its a really new way to get out there and to reach our buyers. Instead of buying our way in or begging our way in we can create excellent content that our buyers will find directly as a result of going to the search engines, through social networking sites, by visiting our own sites and so ?

My Review/Thoughts:

Watching this movie was definitely an emotional experience for me. ?The story about a dad who loses his wife and has to take care of two hurting children while grieving himself, really struck a chord since it reminded me so much about my sister-in-law (you may remember that she lost her husband in a car accident two years ago). ?If you've ever experienced loss, this movie will definitely touch your heart. ?Be prepared to have tissues on hand!

I liked the fact that this was a true story about a family going from loss and despair to hope and perseverance. ?Although this is a family film, I was surprised at the language in it, even for a PG movie. ?There were some cuss words frequently used and a reference that you may find inappropriate to be coming out of a young child's mouth (although used humorously). ?I would recommend this for ages 10+ for that reason, as you may find it difficult to explain the reference I am talking about to a younger child (I won't use the exact word, but it refers to a male body part). ?

There are some really great themes overall including: hard work, dealing with grief, romance (the teen romance was tastefully represented), and compassion for animals. ? Though we were a bit caught off guard by the language, the good story line and themes overshadowed it.?

Matt Damon was definitely perfect in his role as a dad and I hope to see him in more roles like this!

Disclosure:?I received one or more of the products or?services?mentioned above for free (a review DVD from Fox Home Entertainment) in the hope that I would mention it?on my blog. Regardless, I?only recommend products or services I use personally?and believe will be good for my readers.?I am disclosing this in accordance?with the Federal Trade Commission's?16 CFR, Part 255:?"Guides Concerning the?Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising

Senate committee backs 2 nominees for Fed's board

(AP) ? A Senate committee has approved President Barack Obama's two nominations to fill vacancies on the Federal Reserve's board. But prospects for a quick confirmation in the full Senate are uncertain.

The Senate Banking Committee approved by voice vote the nominations of Jeremy Stein, a Harvard economics professor, and Jerome Powell, an investment banker who served in the George H.W. Bush administration.

Obama nominated Stein, a Democrat, and Powell, a Republican, in hopes that pairing nominees from both parties could overcome Republican objections. The Fed board hasn't operated with a full seven members since 2006.

But one Republican senator, David Vitter, a critic of the Fed's policies, has expressed opposition. That won't necessarily block the nominees' confirmation. But it means the Senate won't vote before its two-week break starts this weekend.

'Hunger Games' Rakes In $155 Million At Box Office

'Games' had third-highest opening ever, beating out all 'Twilight Saga' movie openings and every non-sequel ever made.

Much like Katniss Everdeen herself, "The Hunger Games"' aim was true. When it comes to box-office records, it's hard to keep a good book down.

"The Hunger Games" beat all of the "Twilight Saga" movies and every single non-sequel ever with the third-biggest opening weekend of all time. The big-screen adaptation of the first novel in the massively popular young adult trilogy collected $155 million domestically, a figure that was just $3.4 million less than "The Dark Knight" opening in 2008. ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" is still #1 with $169.1 million). Audiences gave the movie a CinemaScore of "A."

"The Hunger Games" collected an estimated $19.7 million in midnight screenings alone. Librarians, academics and bookworms of all stripes should note that all of the movies in the top five "all-time" list are based on some sort of printed source material. "Potter," "Dark Knight," "Hunger Games," "Spider-Man 3" ($151 million) and "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" ($142 million) were, of course, all drawn from either novels or long-running comic book characters. "The Hunger Games" made another $59.3 million overseas, which is about on par with the debuts of the opening installments in both the "Twilight" and "Harry Potter" franchises.

The next installment in author Suzanne Collins' trilogy, "Catching Fire," will see its film adaptation arrive in November of next year. But "Hunger Games" star Jennifer Lawrence will be back in theaters well before that. The 21-year-old Oscar nominee's new horror flick, "House at the End of the Street," is due September 21.

MTV News will exclusively unveil the full trailer for the movie online this Thursday morning. The latest from "Hush" director Mark Tonderai will see Lawrence in a role much different than skilled archer Katniss Everdeen, as she'll play a high school student who gets tangled up with a guy who has very dark secrets.

"The Hunger Games" had an 85 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes at press time, which is exactly the same as last weekend's #1 film, "21 Jump Street." The comedically driven movie version of the earnest late '80s TV drama about cops who went undercover in high schools was #2 this week with $21.3 million, for a total of $71 million. "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax," which enjoyed the eighth-highest debut for an animated movie earlier this month, was #3 with $13.1 million and a $177.3 million total.

"John Carter" was #4 with $5 million for a $62.3 million total, and "Act of Valor" rounded out the top five with $2 million for a $66 million total. Although those totals are similar, "John Carter" carried a reported production budget of $250 million while "Valor" was made for $12 million.

Check out everything we've got on "The Hunger Games."

Bathroom Remodel, Derry, NH

Custom Tile Shower, Derry, NH (3)

Custom Tile Shower, Derry, NH

NH Bath Builders recently completed a bathroom remodel in Derry, NH. This Bathroom remodel included a custom tile steam shower with a? granite bench, marble floor tile, custom cabinetry and frame-less custom glass.

As always NH Bath Builders understands that oftentimes what is most important in a home improvement is the unseen. Which is why we take the time to install Schluter kerdi membrane behind the tile in our tile showers. Schluter kerdi inhibits mold growth and prevents water damage by directing any water that penetrates the grout and tile to the shower drain. Over the years it has become increasingly clear to bathroom remodelers, such as ourselves, that water can penetrate grout and sometimes even tile. This is why it is important to waterproof behind tile in shower installations.

This bathroom remodel in Derry NH. also included custom cabinetry supplied by NH Bath Builders. The advantage to hiring NH Bath Builders for your next bathroom remodel, is that we will supply everything you will need. We can direct you to specific websites and showrooms to help you choose the right fixtures and tile. We work closely with a local cabinet maker to build whatever your bathroom remodel requires. And we have vast experience in every aspect of bathroom remodeling, to make sure the job is done right.

Online pedophiles use new trick to hide child porn

Pedophiles bent on hosting and spreading images of child pornography on the Web are using a new trick to make their offensive websites appear legitimate, depending on how they're accessed.

The online criminals are able to rig their sites, which host images and videos of child sexual abuse, to load "legal adult content" when the URL of the page is typed directly into the browser bar, the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) explained in its 2011 Annual Report published today (March 26).

But when the same website is accessed via a specific gateway site, or a "digital path," the site, knowing where the redirect is coming from, is triggered to take its disguise off and display the child porn content.

"This is a legitimate Web development technique, commonly used, for example, on shopping websites which remember who you are when you return," the IWF wrote. Online pedophiles take advantage of this tactic to disguise their sites and make it harder for authorities to track them down, or even identify them in the first place.

When someone reports finding illegal child abuse content to the IWF and the analyst types in the URL, he or she will see a legitimate adult porn site, with no indication of the content the site is truly hosting. The IWF reported that this porn website masking technique was used 579 times in 2011.

This obfuscation technique also puts companies at risk of entering into business agreements with what they believe to be Web properties hosting legal content.

Mark Harris, vice present of Global Engineering Operations at the security firm Sophos, backs the IWF's work to battle "the inventiveness of child abusers."

"We intercept new methods of distributing images of abuse all too often," Harris wrote in a Sophos blog, "and we're committed to reporting all instances to the authorities that identify perpetrators and rescue victims."?

To drive infections, a hijacking virus mimics a cell's signaling system

Monday, March 26, 2012

New biological research reveals how an invading virus hijacks a cell's workings by imitating a signaling marker to defeat the body's defenses. By manipulating cell signals, the virus destroys a defensive protein designed to inhibit it. This finding, from studies in human cell cultures, may represent a broader targeting strategy used by other viruses, and may lay the scientific groundwork for developing more effective treatments for infectious diseases.

"Learning details of how cells respond to viruses helps us to understand key cellular machinery better," said study leader Matthew D. Weitzman, Ph.D., of the Center for Cellular and Molecular Therapeutics at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. "This study tells us how a virus overcomes intrinsic host defenses. In this case the virus mimics signals used during normal DNA repair mechanisms."

The study team, formerly based at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Calif., published their current findings online March 8 in Molecular Cell.

Biologists have long known that viruses hijack cellular processes to replicate themselves, while host cells have evolved intrinsic defense systems to resist viral invasion. To replicate, viruses must deliver their own DNA into a cell's nucleus, so a viral infection entails a conflict between two genomes?the DNA of the host cell versus the foreign DNA of the virus.

Viruses mount their attack by interacting with specific cell proteins as a way of penetrating the cell's defenses. "In this study, we asked how the herpes simplex virus finds the specific proteins that it interacts with," said Weitzman. "By describing the mechanism of this particular interaction between a virus and a cell protein, we have pinpointed key regulators of a cell's processes, and shed light on how a cell regulates its defenses."

This laboratory study focused on herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1), a common human virus that results in recurrent infections alternating with inactive periods. Like other viruses, HSV-1 is known to manipulate cellular processes in order to infect cells, but the specific mechanisms by which it acts on the DNA repair pathway were previously unknown.

Weitzman's study team was studying a viral protein called ICP0 that overcomes host defenses by targeting cellular proteins for destruction. They found that ICP0 exploits phosphorylation, a chemical mark that is often used in cells to promote interactions between proteins, especially as part of the cellular signaling response to DNA damage. In HSV-1 infection, the phosphorylation signal on ICP0 attracts a cellular DNA damage response protein, RNF8, which binds to the false signaling marker and is then degraded. Because RNF8 normally inhibits viral replication, its destruction leaves the cell vulnerable to HSV-1 infection, as the virus takes over the cell's machinery.

The researchers also found that ICP0 exploits the same phosphorylation signal to bind to other cellular proteins in addition to RNF8, a hint that it may play a broader role in defeating antiviral defenses and manipulating cellular machinery. Weitzman will continue to investigate HSV-1 infection in neurons and in animal models. He also plans to extend his research into other viruses, which may act on different pathways than HSV-1 does. "Ultimately," he added, "better knowledge of molecular mechanisms in infection may suggest strategies to interrupt the viral life cycle and treat infections."

University of Oregon sociologist says that all levels of society are resisting the serious discussions

LONDON -- Resistance at individual and societal levels must be recognized and treated before real action can be taken to effectively address threats facing the planet from human-caused contributions to climate change.

That's the message to this week's Planet Under Pressure Conference by a group of speakers led by Kari Marie Norgaard, professor of sociology and environmental studies at the University of Oregon. In a news briefing Monday, Norgaard discussed her paper and issues her group will address in a conference session on Wednesday.

Scientists from multiple disciplines from around the world are at the conference to assess where they stand before the June 4-6 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro -- also known as "Rio+20" since it is occurring 20 years after 1992's Rio Earth Summit that drew officials from 172 governments.

"We find a profound misfit between dire scientific predictions of ongoing and future climate changes and scientific assessments of needed emissions reductions on the one hand, and weak political, social or policy response on the other," Norgaard said. Serious discussions about solutions, she added, are mired in cultural inertia "that exists across spheres of the individual, social interaction, culture and institutions."

"Climate change poses a massive threat to our present social, economic and political order. From a sociological perspective, resistance to change is to be expected," she said. "People are individually and collectively habituated to the ways we act and think. This habituation must be recognized and simultaneously addressed at the individual, cultural and societal level -- how we think the world works and how we think it should work."

In their paper, Norgaard and co-authors Robert Brulle of Drexel University in Philadelphia and Randolph Haluza-DeLay of The King's University College in Canada draw from the work of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002) to describe social mechanisms that maintain social stability or cultural inertia in the face of climate change at the three levels.

At the personal level, climate-change information raises fear about the future, a sense of helplessness and guilt. These emotions clash with individual -- and often national -- identity, sense of self-efficacy and the need for basic security and survival. In small groups, interactions often subvert political conversations and/or submerge the visibility of climate-change issues. At the macro level, or society at large, the co-authors point to an absence of serious discussion of climate change within U.S. Congressional hearings and in media coverage.

In many discussions in the last 30 years, climate change has been seen as either a hoax or fixable with minimal political or economic intervention, said Norgaard, author of the book "Living in Denial: Climate Change, Emotions and Everyday Life" (2011, MIT Press). "This kind of cultural resistance to very significant social threat is something that we would expect in any society facing a massive threat," she said. The discussion, she said, is comparable to what happened with challenges to racism or slavery in the U.S. South.

"Just as we cannot overhaul a car fleet overnight, we cannot change our ideological superstructure overnight," Norgaard said. "We must first be aware that this resistance is happening at all levels of our society," she said. "If you have to push a heavy weight, it doesn't mean it can't be moved, but in order to push it you had better know that you have something heavy and figure out how to move it -- where to put the lever to shift the weight."

Most discussion on climate change has focused on natural science. It is time, she said, to broaden that approach. "Social scientific responses have been limited in their primary focus on individuals. These explanations are important but partial and thus inadequate as explanations or guides for future action. Our cross-dimensional model links individuals, culture and society. We have to take all dimensions into account simultaneously."

"Confronting climate change is daunting but it is not an insurmountable obstacle if we collectively put our minds together," said Kimberly Andrews Espy, vice president for research and innovation at the University of Oregon. "Interdisciplinary collaboration among social scientists and those involved in technological advances can help to move us forward."

Teacher Education for Children with Disabilities

?

?

?

  1. 1.????? Background:

?

Children with disabilities are among the most stigmatized and excluded, often facing marginalization within their own family, community, school and in the wider society. In a self-perpetuating circle, social exclusion and isolation of children with disabilities leads to poor health and education outcomes (literacy can be as low as 1% for women with disabilities ), affecting chances for participation and putting them at higher risk for violence, abuse and exploitation.? UNESCO estimates that 98% of children with disabilities in developing countries do not attend school and that 99% of girls with disabilities are illiterate. Quality inclusive education for most students with disabilities remains elusive though there are sufficient islands of good practice around the world, at different scales, to show it is achievable. However, education is a fundamental human right and is widely recognized as a means to develop human capital, to improve economic performance, and to enhance people?s capabilities and choices.? Furthermore, diversity in the classroom benefits all children by improving learning and understanding, as well as by addressing stereotypes [1].?

Over 108 countries around the world have ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), a binding legal instrument with a specific provision on the right to education and freedom from exploitation, violence and abuse for persons with disabilities. Article 24 of the CRPD creates a clear obligation for governments to provide education to children, youth and adults with disabilities on an equal basis with other children, and to provide that education within an inclusive system. Article 24 requires all educators to make reasonable accommodations, provide the right support and individual programmes of study so all children with disabilities can be educated to achieve their academic, creative and social potential.? In addition, Article 8 requires all schools to ?foster at all levels of the education system, including in all children from an early age, an attitude of respect for the rights of persons with disabilities?.

The UNICEF is currently working towards sharpening the focus on the ?equity? in education through multiple strategies and initiatives, existing and new. At the global level, they include the development of the bottle-neck analysis)[1], the Out-of-School Children Initiative [2], Child-friendly Schooling including children with disabilities[3], new research on social norms and teacher?s for the marginalized, among others. Similarly, education programmes in UNICEF country offices and regional offices are working to address specific issues as they get played out within the regional, national and sub-national contexts to further promote the equity[4].

Equity-based approaches to education involve removing barriers and bottlenecks to education, within and outside education systems, to provide equitable educational and learning opportunities for all. This requires particular attention to excluded and marginalized children. In policy and programming, equity-based approaches to education require a more nuanced analytical foundation, based on robust data and evidence, that takes account of the multiple and interconnected factors that contribute to disparities in access and learning. Such an analytical foundation provides the basis for appropriate evidence-based measures to reduce disparities.

With support from the Australian Government, UNICEF Education is thus undertaking the Rights, Education, and Protection (REAP) project aimed at enhancing education and child protection systems to be sensitive, responsive and inclusive of children with disabilities. REAP is enabling UNICEF to strengthen its approach, as well as provide guidance to countries and implement new programmatic responses on including children with disabilities in quality education settings. The project is strategically targeting a gap in teacher education for children with disabilities as a priority for action. Including children in education will require instituting relevant teacher education and therefore through the REAP project, UNICEF has agreed to develop globally relevant guidance on teacher?s education for disabled children. This guidance is intended to cover initial teacher training, in-service training for current teachers and advanced and leadership training for principals and school leaders, as well as teacher trainers themselves. The guidance will be grounded on evidence-based theories and existing knowledge on teacher education for children with disabilities.

The work must also be grounded on the understanding that the paradigm shift underlying the UNCRPD from a traditional /medical model approach to a social/human rights model is clearly understood and reflected in education.? Much of the practice towards children with disabilities is characterised as special educational needs related to the old paradigm. This new paradigm is characterised by UNESCO as the process of changing the structures, organisation, learning, curriculum and assessment of the school to fit the diversity of pupils, rather than changing the pupil to fit the school. The role of Disabled People?s Organisations is a crucial component of any effective implementation strategy of Article 24 emphasizing the UNCRPD?s development motto ?Nothing about Us without Us?. In many parts of the world parents of children with disabilities have been the only ones to believe that their children can be educated, and have been a major catalyst for the development teacher preparation for Inclusive Education. The perspectives of these two groups need to be a central part of the perspective of this project. This work must also streamline to take into consideration emergency settings.

?

  1. 2.????? Purpose:

?

To identify a consultant to undertake a mapping, scoping and then synthesize global and regionally relevant strategies on teacher education for children with disabilities, based on analysis of the current situation, internal and external to UNICEF. Specifically, the mapping should provide a view of existing strategies, resources, tools and evidence to help UNICEF address gaps in policy level teacher education guidance for children with disabilities to stakeholders across the national, sub-national and school level context and to enable inclusive teaching and learning.

?The work must be grounded on the understanding that the paradigm shift underlying the UNCRPD from a traditional /medical model approach to a social/human rights model is clearly understood and reflected in education.? Much of the practice towards children with disabilities is characterised as special educational needs related to the old paradigm. ?

  1. 3.????? Expected results:

?

?

Mapping

?

The consultancy will first map existing UNICEF and partner programmes, in particular, 1) Regular teacher education and the components that address children with disabilities and, 2) Special teacher education programmes that target teachers of children with disabilities who are not mainstreamed.

Literature review, scoping and programming needs assessment

?

UNICEF is in a very unique position with regards to field experience and the ability to disseminate knowledge widely, and will greatly benefit from a global ?Review of the Literature? sub-divided into Regions. Drawing upon a wealth of global, regional and country information on best-practices and field application on Teacher Education for Inclusive of Children with Disabilities Education[5], develop a compilation of literature with recommendations on the subject of teacher education for children with disabilities. Consultant will identify general global strategies as well as strategies specific to each region and make recommendations. CEE CIS is leading in this regard, and other UNICEF offices have already done extensive reviews as a starting point. For this the below actions are needed:

?

To undertake scoping (internal and external) of capacities, institutions, agencies and resources on teacher education for children with disabilities.

?

  1. a.?????? Identify and review key documents on the subject? (including information/documents from different regions and covering strategies across the life-cycle: pre, primary and secondary),
  2. b.?????? Review UNICEF?s institutional priorities and strategies for education, child protection and ECD (Early Childhood Development, and specific country/regional experiences related to education and children with disabilities, to better understand the context and institutional focus in which UNICEF is working to promote/ implement inclusive teacher education[6].
  3. c.?????? Compile information on the various strategies and activities of agencies and/or institutions that are working on teacher preparation for children with disabilities.
  4. d.?????? Analysis of potential partners, listing their strengths and weaknesses.
  5. e.?????? Survey of external and internal stakeholders? capacities and resources including ?HQ, regional and country offices? (specific CO?s, to be determined), UNICEF capacities, tools and resources in relation to ?work on teacher education. Conduct conference calls and interview the relevant Governments entities, Partners and NGOs appropriate.
  6. f.??????? Consult (where possible electronically and by telephone) with key members of the former Inclusive Education flagship/network (formerly housed by UNESCO) to understand the expectations and concerns relating to the education capacity assessment and policy/strategy development.
  7. g.?????? Develop a series of PPP presentations to UNICEF based on findings and analysis of scoping exercise to be used in future programme planning meetings concerning the subject.
  8. h.?????? Analyze findings and results accounting for the capacity of the institutions and agencies to identify and map potential partners for UNICEF to develop future programmes.
  9. i.???????? Create a list of vetted names/profiles of individual and institutions for an electronic networking list with external and internal partners.
  10. j.???????? Present the methods and findings of the scoping exercise to Global, Regional and Country UNICEF colleagues in a webinar/other electronic/communications means and based on? exercise provide recommendations for a multi-year (according to the REAP project timeline) Programme Cooperation Agreement (PCA) on Training of Trainers for Regions.??
