Bacterium transforms into weapon against sleeping sickness
ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Scientists of the Antwerp Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITG) opened a new front against the cause of sleeping sickness. This parasite is transmitted between humans by tsetse flies. The researchers learned a bacterium living in those flies how to produce antibodies against the parasite. Application in the field is still a long way of, but the technique shows quite some promise.
Sleeping sickness is caused by trypanosomes, parasites being transmitted by the bite of a tsetse fly.
The World Health Organization estimates the yearly death toll at between 10,000 and 20,000 people. On top of that, the parasite also infects cattle, causing considerable economic loss. Many small African farmers depend on their cattle.
Without treatment, an infection is irrevocably fatal. Unfortunately, many poor people present at the hospital only in a late stadium. At that time the Trypanosoma parasites have lodged themselves in the brain, behind the notorious blood-brain barrier that keeps most drugs out. Arsenic compounds can pass the barrier and kill the parasite, but they also kill five per cent of the patients. New drugs are not in the pipeline.
Besides the parasite, one may also attack its vector, the tsetse fly. But insecticides may be detrimental to the environment, certainly in the long run. Therefore scientists look for alternative strategies. For instance genetically modified insects that are incapable of being infected by the parasite, or do not transmit it. But germline transformation of tsetse flies is unfeasible. To do so, one must be able to handle the eggs, but tsetse flies do not lay eggs, they directly bring forth a larva.
Therefore, the Antwerp researchers took another road. Tsetse flies harbour, as is the case with many insects, resident bacteria. One of them, Sodalis glossinidius (literally: companion of the tsetse fly) exclusively lives in tsetse flies. And it can be cultivated in the lab. De Vooght was the first to genetically modify the bacterium so it produces, and excretes, a very efficient type of antibody, called a nanobody. She identified two different secretory pathways that transported the nanobodies out of the bacterium. She also demonstrated that the bacterium was not hampered by its modification, so it can stand its ground amidst non-modified, 'wild type' congeners inside the fly.
Next, with antibiotics she cleared tsetse flies of their wild type bacteria and replaced those by the modified bacteria. These successfully colonized the flies and started producing nanobodies. The nanobodies also were present in the midgut, where the sleeping sickness parasite also is to be found.
De Vooght demonstrated the feasibility of the technique, but it still needs some development before it can be used to control sleeping sickness in the field. For instance, the antibodies now produced by the bacteria, are directed against a form of the parasite occurring in humans, not in flies. This is simply because this antibody was available, while the one against the fly form still has to be developed. De Vooght: "We wanted to demonstrate first that the technique works in principle. Now we have achieved that, we can tackle the technical details."
To the scientists it is just as important that symbiotic bacteria producing all kinds of substances are a means to getting insight into the interactions between disease-causing organisms and their insect vectors. The Antwerp researchers already demonstrated that the sleeping sickness parasite interferes with the saliva production of tsetse flies, forcing them to bite more humans than they otherwise would do. Insight in that kind of interactions might be instrumental to opening new ways of attacking diseases.

Falcon is a really great homescreen widget for Twitter. It follows closely in line with the Android design guidelines while still having its own distinct style. The widget is fully resizable and offers a handful of solid color choices and layouts. It still carries a beta tag, so Falcon is totally free, but still a work-in-progress.
The full complement of standard functions are available, including replying, retweeting (both native and quoted), favoriting, and sharing tweets via the system-wide menu. Conversations are threaded, though the tweets within the thread don’t have in-line reply/retweet/favorite controls, which is occasionally an issue.

Dawn Spacecraft Leaving Huge Asteroid Vesta Next Week
NASA's Dawn probe is gearing up to depart the giant asteroid Vesta next week and begin the long trek to the dwarf planet Ceres, the largest object in the asteroid belt.
The Dawn spacecraft is slated to leave Vesta on the night of Sept. 4 (early morning Sept. 5 EDT), ending a 14-month stay at the 330-mile-wide (530 kilometers) body. The journey to Ceres should take roughly 2.5 years, with Dawn reaching the dwarf planet in early 2015, researchers said.
"Thrust is engaged, and we?are now climbing away from Vesta atop a blue-green pillar of xenon ions," Dawn chief engineer and mission director Marc Rayman, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., said in a statement. "We are feeling somewhat wistful about concluding a fantastically productive and exciting exploration of Vesta, but now have our sights set on dwarf planet Ceres."

The $466 million Dawn mission launched in 2007 to explore Vesta and Ceres, huge and ancient objects that have borne witness to most of the solar system's history. Scientists hope Dawn's observations of these two bodies can shed light on our cosmic neighborhood's earliest days.
Dawn's stay at Vesta revealed that the massive space rock is a complex, layered body with an iron core. Based on these observations, researchers have concluded that Vesta is actually a long-surviving protoplanet ? a planetary building block like those that coalesced to form rocky planets such as Earth and Mars.
Vesta appears to be the only such building block left, as the others were incorporated into planets or destroyed by collisions long ago, researchers said. Vesta itelf has taken a beating, with Dawn spotting craters from two colossal impacts over the past two billion years.
One of these craters, called Rheasilvia, spans 314 miles (505 km) ? nearly Vesta's entire diameter.
"We went to Vesta to fill in the blanks of our knowledge about the early history of our solar system," said Dawn principal investigator Christopher Russell, of UCLA. "Dawn has filled in those pages, and more, revealing to us how special Vesta is as a survivor from the earliest days of the solar system. We can now say with certainty that Vesta resembles a small planet more closely than a typical asteroid."
Dawn traveled about 1.7 billion miles (2.7 billion km) to reach Vesta, and the trip to the 590-mile-wide (950 km) Ceres will roll the probe's odometer reading up to 3 billion miles (5 billion km) or so, officials said.

Man apparently attempting Bigfoot hoax killed on Montana highway
MISSOULA, Montana (Reuters) - A man wearing a bushy, military-style camouflage suit in an apparent attempt to impersonate the mythical creature Bigfoot has died after being struck on a Montana highway by two cars, police said on Tuesday.
Randy Lee Tenley, 44, was dressed in a "ghillie" -- an outfit favored by military snipers and game hunters -- and standing in the middle of southbound lanes on U.S. Highway 93 near Kalispell on Sunday when he was struck twice in quick succession, Montana Highway Patrol spokesman Sergeant Steve Lavin said.
"From what I understand, at least one of his friends said that he was trying to induce a sasquatch sighting by using the suit along the highway," Lavin said. "This is a first for me after 20 years on the highway patrol. It's strange."
Tenley was first hit by a car driven by a 15-year-old girl (15-year-olds are allowed to drive in Montana with a learner's permit). A second car driven by a 17-year-old girl struck him moments later when he was already down on the roadway, Lavin said. Police said they do not know which impact killed him.
Friends of Tenley told Montana Highway Patrol trooper Jim Schneider that the man had attempted a similar hoax before, but never along the highway, police said.
Bigfoot, or sasquatch, is the name given to an ape-like creature whose existence has never been proven. Still, some people believe the creature lives in forest areas in North America, particularly the Pacific Northwest.
The Kalispell Army-Navy supply store sells the same kind of ghillie suit that police say Tenley was wearing.
Manager Dennis Petersen, who did not recall selling one to Tenley, said the shaggy $100 suits are often bought by boys who use them in paintball games. "I don't usually sell them to well-grown adults," he said.

NASA to broadcast first song from Mars today
A song called "Reach for the Stars" will make its debut, appropriately, from space.
NASA plans to broadcast the tune, written by rapper and songwriter will.i.am, from its Curiosity rover, newly landed on the surface of Mars.
Though Curiosity has no speakers, it will transmit the song via radio waves back to Earth to be received at 1 p.m. PDT (4 p.m. EDT) Tuesday, Aug. 28 during an educational event at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif.?
"Members of the team that successfully landed the rover on Mars earlier this month will explain to students the mission and the technology behind the song's interplanetary transmission," NASA officials wrote in a statement. "will.i.am will then premiere 'Reach for the Stars,' a new composition about the singer's passion for science, technology and space exploration.?
During the event, NASA scientists and mission managers will talk about the Curiosity mission and explain the technology behind the broadcast to students. It won't be the first broadcast from space?NASA used the Mars rover to broadcast a spoken message from the space agency's chief, Charles Bolden, today (Aug. 17).
The musician will.i.am, a member of hip-hop group The Black-Eyed Peas, was onsite at JPL Aug. 5 (PDT) to watch Curiosity land on Mars. The car-size, $2.5 billion rover is beginning a two-year mission to investigate whether Mars ever had the conditions necessary to support microbial life.

Stosur's road to a repeat starts at US Open
NEW YORK (AP) ? None of this quite makes sense to Samantha Stosur.
There she was, center stage in the biggest tennis stadium in the world, taking on one of the game's most intimidating players, and making it look so easy.
But in so many ways, that 6-2, 6-3 victory over Serena Williams in the U.S. Open feels like it happened much more than a year ago.
So far in 2012, Stosur has lost in the first round in front of the home fans at the Australian Open. She has lost in the second round at Wimbledon, then again in the first round at the London Olympics. Sandwiched in between, she made a run to the semifinals of the French Open, but fell apart by committing 21 of her 48 unforced errors during an ugly third set loss to Sara Errani.
The questions that came up after all these losses: Did nerves get to her? Quite a strange thing to ask given the setting and the opponent for her first Grand Slam final victory last year.
"I think everyone suffers from nerves," Stosur conceded. "Sometimes, certain people make a bigger deal about it than what it is. It depends on what you're talking about. I don't think you'd find anyone who doesn't get a little bit nervous. It's just how you handle it. The more you get through it, the better you get at handling situations."
Stosur, seeded seventh this year, kicks off the tournament Monday as defending champion, playing the day's first match in Arthur Ashe Stadium against 64th-ranked Petra Martic of Croatia.
Despite her status as defending champion, Stosur is not considered one of the favorites coming into Flushing Meadows this year. British sports books have her listed at 28-1 to repeat, same as Venus Williams, who has a 1-2 record in Grand Slams in 2012, and behind No. 4 seed Serena Williams, No. 3 Maria Sharapova, No. 1 Victoria Azarenka and four others.
"It is what it is," Stosur said. "It's fine whether you're talked of as being the favorite or not. At this point during the tournament, it doesn't really matter. Everyone is starting from scratch, and obviously things become clearer as the weeks go on."
Other players starting Monday include third-seeded Andy Murray of Britain, coming off his Olympic gold medal at the London Olympics. He faces Alex Bogomolov Jr. of Russia. Top-seeded Roger Federer plays American Donald Young in the night session.
Also playing in Arthur Ashe Stadium are No. 3 Maria Sharapova, against Melinda Czink of Hungary, and No. 23 Kim Clijsters, opening the final tournament of her career with a first-round match against American Victoria Duval. Powerful typhoon approaches Japan's Okinawa island
TOKYO (AP) ? The strongest typhoon to approach Okinawa in several years was bearing down on the southern Japanese island on Sunday as residents were told to stay indoors and warned its strong gusts could overturn cars and cause waves of up to 12 meters (40 feet).
Slow-moving Typhoon Bolaven was centered about 150 kilometers (93 miles) southeast of Okinawa and was expected to pass over the island Sunday evening, dumping as much as 500 millimeters (20 inches) of rain over a 24-hour period, weather officials said.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said wind speeds near the center of the typhoon were about 180 kph (112 mph), with extremely strong gusts reaching 252 kilometers per hour (155 mph).
Those gusts could knock over telephone poles and even overturn cars, while waves around the island could top 12 meters (40 feet), public broadcaster NHK warned.
NHK reported two injuries, including a 78-year-old man who was knocked over by winds and cut his forehead. There were no reports of major damage, but some 200 households were without electricity and some 300 people had taken shelter in public buildings, said disaster officials in Okinawa, which has a population of 1.4 million.
All domestic and international flights in and out of Naha Airport, serving the island's capital, were cancelled.
Gusts from the typhoon could equal or surpass the previous record for Naha of 265 kph (165 mph) winds in a 1956 typhoon, said Tsukasa Uezu, an official with the Okinawa Meteorological Observatory Weather Information Center.
The storm's relatively slow movement ? 15 kph (9 mph) to the northwest ? means "exposure to wind and rain will be that much longer," and raises the possibility of serious damage, said Shun Miygai, an official with the Okinawa Disaster Prevention and Crisis Management Center.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued storm and storm surge warnings in Okinawa prefecture and for high waves in the waters around the island.
More than half the 50,000 U.S. troops based in Japan are stationed in Okinawa. At Kadena Air Base, one of the biggest bases on the island, all shops and service facilities were ordered closed and movement around the base was to be kept to a minimum. All entry into the ocean was prohibited.
The typhoon, the 15th of the season, was expected to continue into the East China Sea and then into the Yellow Sea, possibly affecting southern coastal areas of South Korea by Tuesday, Japanese weather officials said.
Bolaven comes on the heels of Typhoon Tembin, which soaked southern Taiwan on Friday, largely sparing populated areas before blowing out to sea again.

S.Africa starts funerals of slain Lonmin workers
Grieving South Africans have started burying the 44 victims of the Lonmin platinum mine killings, with three funerals held on Saturday, one of them in the mining town of Marikana.
Hundreds of residents and workers attended the funeral of Papi Ledingoane, 24, at a cemetery in Marikana, according to local radio 702.
He was one of the 34 shot dead when police opened fire on hundreds of workers staging a pay protest on August 16 at Lonmin, the world's third largest producer of platinum.
Another 10 -- two of them policemen -- died in clashes between rival unions in the week before the nation's deadliest police action since the apartheid years.
Wearing white T-shirts, some of Ledingoane's workmates acted as pall bearers at the sombre funeral where grief-stricken relatives wept and some fainted.
Senior government officials including Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi and the minister in President Jacob Zuma's office, Collins Chabane, joined the mourners.
Two other miners were buried in the Eastern Cape province, home to the majority of the victims, in the first of a series of funerals over the next few weeks.
About 3,000 rock drill operators at the Lonmin mine launched the illegal strike on August 10. It quickly degenerated into clashes with non-strikers.
In chilling scenes that evoked memories of apartheid brutality, police insist that they used teargas first and only opened fire after miners shot at them. The miners say they were armed only with spears, machetes and clubs.
Meanwhile platinum giant Lonmin reported that nearly 60 percent of workers reported for duty on Saturday at one of its two sets of shafts at Marikana as it sought an accord to end the labour dispute.
"Eastern Shafts are working this weekend and we have 57 percent attendance across these shafts. The rest of the mine is closed as this is their off-weekend," Lonmin said in a statement.
Lonmin said it would spend the weekend trying to persuade the remaining workers to return.
"It's quite good news that 57 percent of the workers in this section pitched up," spokeswoman Sue Vey told AFP.
On Friday, Lomnin reported only about 24 percent of its 28,000 work force at Marikana had signed in.
It said talks were ongoing to find a "common ground among all stakeholders."
"We continue to communicate with our employees to reassure them that we are all working together to bring resolution and we encourage them to come back to work," it added.
Workers are demanding a wage increase to 12,500 rand ($1,500, 1,200 euros), claiming they currently earn only 4,000 rand.
But according to figures released by Lonmin on Friday, when bonuses and other allowances are included, the rock drill operators who launched the strike earn an average of 9,813 rand before taxes.
On Friday Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant met with union representatives in Rustenburg, the main city in the platinum belt in the north of the country.

Sony Mobile To Lay Off 1000 People, Move HQ To Tokyo From ...
The crunch among handset makers who are not Samsung and Apple continues apace. Today, Android OEM?Sony announced that its loss-making mobile handset division Sony Mobile Communications would be laying out 15% of its workforce ? 1,000 people approximately ? as part of a bigger restructuring. It will also move its HQ and ?certain other functions? from Lund, Sweden to Tokyo, Japan in October 2012.
It looks like the main impact will be in Sweden in terms of layoffs, as Sony moves the operation closer to home base: 650 in Lund, with the rest ?primarily consultants in Sweden.? The process is due to complete by March 2014 ?as the company seeks to increase operational efficiency, reduce costs and drive profitable growth.?
Sony Mobile also notes that its Lund operation is not closing down altogether: it will continue ?to be an important strategic site for Sony Mobile, with the main focus on software and application development,? the company says. In addition to Lund and Tokyo the company also has operations in Beijing, China. As part of the restructuring, Sony Mobile says it will be ?redefining? the roles of each site, although details of what that will mean where not revealed in the release.

However, if the ?momentum? is real, the last earnings show that this is not translating yet into profit. The unit in the last quarter posted a $356 million net loss. Part of that, Sony noted, was due to ?the?impact of the above-mentioned lower sales of PCs and the impact associated with the acquisition of Sony Mobile.?
At the same time sales increased 132.9% year-on-year to $3.6 billion. In fact, research from Enders Analysis shows that among the bigger handset makers, Sony Mobile was the only one, apart from Samsung and Apple (of course), who grew mobile revenues over last year.
Ericsson ? and then Sony Ericsson ? once enjoyed a position as one of the world?s biggest handset makers. They were also very early movers in the touchscreen smartphone space, with the P800 being one of the very first touchscreen Symbian devices, in 2002, to hit the market.
But like other companies from the Old Guard, Sony has been hit hard by competition from newer entrants. According Q2 handset sales figures from Gartner, Sony Mobile didn?t make rankings among the top mobile phone makers. That list was led by Samsung, with Nokia and Apple filling out the top three, flanked then by a number of newer Chinese handset makers. (Motorola, another old-timer that Google will now be trying to infuse with new life, is still just about in the list with a 2.2 percent share.)

Sony Mobile Communications Announces New Operational Structure and Reduction in Workforce
LONDON, UK ? August 23, 2012 ? Sony Mobile Communications AB (?Sony Mobile?) today announced that it is altering the global operational structure of its development sites in Tokyo, Japan, Lund, Sweden and Beijing, China. In October 2012, Sony Mobile will move its corporate headquarters and certain other functions from Lund, Sweden, to Tokyo, Japan. Sony Mobile has also redefined the roles and responsibilities of each major development site to leverage the strengths of each respective site. These measures aim to enhance operational and development capabilities of Sony Mobile such as time to market efficiency, streamline supply chain management and drive greater integration with the wider Sony group.
?Sony has identified the mobile business as one of its core businesses and the Xperia? smartphone portfolio continues to gain momentum with customers and consumers worldwide,? said Kunimasa Suzuki, President and CEO of Sony Mobile. ?We are accelerating the integration and convergence with the wider Sony group to continue enhancing our offerings, and a more focused and efficient operational structure will help to reduce Sony Mobile?s costs, enhance time to market efficiency and bring the business back to a place of strength.?
In relation to the operational structure changes, Sony Mobile plans to reduce its global headcount by approximately 15 percent (approximately 1000 personnel, including consultants) throughout the financial years of 2012 and 2013 (i.e. by the end of March 2014) as the company seeks to increase operational efficiency, reduce costs and drive profitable growth.
Today Sony Mobile filed a redundancy notification (?varsel?) with the Swedish authorities to notify them that the company expects around 650 employees across a number of functions at Sony Mobile in Lund to be affected by job closures. The remaining headcount reductions will be primarily consultants in Sweden. Lund will continue to be an important strategic site for Sony Mobile, with the main focus on software and application development.

Jose has been the opening act for Augie T on the road, and he can also be heard doing a ?bomb joke of the day? on O?ahu radio.

East Maui Watershed Partnership and Viewpoints Gallery in Makawao have partnered for the seventh year in a row to raise awareness about Maui?s native Species. The exhibit affords the general public the opportunity to connect with Maui?s unique flora and fauna through the lens of an artists? viewpoint and perspective.
Starting in the spring of 2004, artists? young and old, professional and amateur have answered the call to help raise awareness about Maui?s native Hawaiian species and unique island ecosystem. Artwork uses any type of media that depicts a native plant, animal, insect, or native landscape of Maui.
For this year?s native species art show, 139 pieces from 105 local Maui artists were entered and 78 pieces were selected by jurors Connie Adams and Dr. Art Medeiros.

All proceeds raised at this event will support the programs and mission of Maui Nui Botanical Gardens. The MNBG is dedicated to the protection of Maui Nui?s rich native plants and cultural heritage.
