Local businesses and community organizations join with County Executive to offer healthy activities and discounts across Ulster County
Ulster County Executive Mike Hein was joined by Ulster County business and community leaders at the Police Athletic League?s (PAL) Boxing Training Center to officially kick off the 2nd Annual Healthy Ulster County Week.?? Healthy Ulster County Week is intended to promote healthy living and includes events to encourage Ulster County residents to eat better, exercise more, and increase awareness of their health.? During Healthy Ulster County Week, special promotions are being offered by local businesses and community organizations to help keep Ulster County residents healthy.
?Healthy Ulster County Week is an important part of my administration?s initiative to make Ulster County the healthiest county in New York State,? said County Executive Hein.? ?I receive a lot of encouragement during the year about my commitment to the health of our community.? It is exciting that businesses and community organizations throughout Ulster County have joined with me during the 2nd Annual Healthy Ulster County Week to offer such diverse and exciting health-oriented special events and discounts.?
?The Ulster County Health Department is fully committed to meeting the County Executive?s goal of making Ulster County the healthiest county in New York State,? said Dr. Carol Smith, the County Executive?s nominee for Commissioner of Health and Mental Health.? ?Healthy Ulster County Week highlights many of the healthy options available in our county.? I encourage all Ulster County residents to visit www.HealthyUlsterCounty.net right now to learn about Healthy Ulster County Week events and to keep visiting year round to find additional healthy resources and ideas.?
According to Debra Karnasiewicz, MD, MPH, Founder and Director of the Women?s Health and Fitness Expo, ?This year?s Women?s Health and Fitness Expo will focus on weight loss, the lifestyle changes that need to be put in place to maintain it, and the impact a healthy lifestyle can have on preventing and eliminating illnesses like diabetes and heart disease.?? Our goal is to challenge residents to improve their health and the health of Ulster County by becoming more active and making better food choices.? We are proud to kick off Healthy Ulster County Week at the Expo on May 19th. Together, we can reach our ultimate goal to make Ulster County the healthiest county in New York State.?
?The Kingston Police Athletic League is on board with County Executive Hein?s Healthy Ulster mission,? said Allen Nace, PAL Vice President and Boxing Coach.? ?PAL?s goal is to enrich lives by showing youth that crime is a dead end and that becoming a productive member of society will offer more rewards in the long term.? On the surface, PAL?s Boxing Program presents youth with a small opportunity ? to learn to box.? But this small opportunity goes a long way toward moving them in a positive direction.? Through boxing, these kids are exposed to a variety of things that enrich their lives. They get to take trips to other communities to box and they learn that they have options in their lives.? It is huge deal to them that the County Executive is here today to talk to them.??? Thanks to Kingston Police Office and PAL President Aaron Fitzgerald for being a great leader and a great coach and for programs like Healthy Ulster County Week, the youth who participate in this program will grow up to be healthy members of our society.?
