Smule Guitar app plays nicely with Sing (video)

Smules Guitar brings crossapp musical collaboration video

Bay Area app developer Smule has amassed an army of mobile instruments, but really, what fun are all those music makers without a little good old-fashioned jamming? Today, the company's offering up the simply named Guitar, an app that lets you strum along to songs recorded through its equally straightforwardly named Sing. At present, the company has hand-picked a dozen or so singers, letting you play along (though expect that number to increase, as time goes on), becoming "the first pair of [Smule] apps that actually talk to each other," according to the company.

Using the app will be pretty intuitive for anyone who's messed around with Guitar Hero and its ilk, letting you know when to strum via swipe through a dynamically scrolling layout. On more advanced modes, you can choose the chord you want to play, but in Easy, it'll just do it for you. You can pick a single string with a tap and add vibrato by shaking your iPhone / iPad. We got a preview of the app during a recent visit to the Smule office for the Engadget Show, back when it went under the (arguably superior) name "Strum." Check out video of that and the final version after the break.

'DWTS' pros question impact of voting snafu

TV

Traditionally, the celebrities and pros from "Dancing With the Stars" do interviews immediately after the finale. But runner-up pro Val Chmerkovskiy left the studio Tuesday night right after the live broadcast, passing on doing any post-show talks with the media.

The official word from ABC was that Chmerkovskiy had to go home and pack for his overnight flight to New York City, where he, other finalists and champions Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough were expected to do a round of television interviews. Pickler, Hough and the others were on hand after the show.

Still, reporters in the post-show press line were left to wonder if Chmerkovskiy was avoiding being asked to speculate on whether or not he and Zendaya could have been the victors on Tuesday, had the usual online voting option at ABC.com worked after Monday?s performance show.

?It?s really unfortunate,? pro Sharna Burgess, former partner of Andy Dick, told TODAY.com. ?That?s how a lot of international people vote. That changes things quite a bit.?

Burgess noted that younger viewers (who are arguably more likely in the fan demographic of Disney star Zendaya) tend to vote using the Web.

?Kids are Internet savvy, and they don?t call in or text,? Burgess mused. ?Did it play on the results? Of course ? but whether it affected (the final result) I don?t know.?

?It?s a little sad,? said Karina Smirnoff, who danced alongside finalist Jacoby Jones. ?God works in mysterious ways. We can?t control that. We?ll let the Lord take care of that. All we can control is what we put out on the dance floor."

?It is what it is,? said Olympian Aly Raisman, who, along with pro partner Mark Ballas, came in fourth place. ?I?m so happy for Kellie and Derek. The most important thing for me was that I had fun. I got fourth, and that?s okay.?

None of this is to say that Pickler and Hough didn?t earn their win. In fact, many felt that their victory was a done deal after the pair performed their emotion-packed freestyle routine on Monday, arguably one of the top showstoppers in "Dancing" history. The routine not only earned the duo a perfect score of 30, but fans also selected it as the finale encore dance.

?(Winning) all depends on the freestyle,? Cheryl Burke, a two-time champion, explained. ?I've experienced losing the competition because of my freestyle, and I've experienced winning it because of the freestyle. It doesn?t matter what you?ve done in the last nine weeks. It?s all about your final week.?

Report: NPS hantavirus response followed policy

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) ? Federal investigators probing the hantavirus outbreak blamed for three deaths at Yosemite National Park recommended on Monday that design changes to tent cabins and other privately run lodging first be reviewed by National Park Service officials.

The report released by the Interior Department's Office of Inspector General found that park officials responded to last summer's outbreak appropriately and within department policy.

"When the outbreak was identified, NPS mobilized to contain and remediate the outbreak and to prevent further outbreaks," Mary Kendall, a deputy inspector general, wrote in a letter attached to the report.

Still, the report found that current policy didn't require park officials to approve design changes made to the "Signature tent cabins" by concessionaire Delaware North Companies Parks and Resorts, which added rafters and wall studs to the structures.

Investigators determined that deer mice, which can carry the illness, nested inside the double walls of the new tents in Yosemite's family friendly Curry Village.

At least eight of the nine tourists who fell ill stayed in the tent cabins.

Because the changes to the cabins were considered routine maintenance, current park service policy did not require prior approval, the report found.

The report also recommended that the park service begin cyclical pest monitoring and inspections of all public accommodations.

While there is a current pest monitoring program at Yosemite, Delaware North was responsible for Curry Village, which was not considered at high risk for hantavirus.

The company issued a statement late Monday saying it would follow the recommendations in the report.

"DNC Parks & Resorts at Yosemite has consistently worked hand-in-hand with the National Park Service and public health officials on this issue," spokeswoman Lisa Cesaro said in the statement. "The Signature Tent Cabins have been removed from Curry Village. We are following the recommendations by the National Park Service, which were developed in consultation with the California Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."

Prior to the outbreak, Delaware only responded to pests in the cabins when visitors or housekeeping staff complained, the report said.

Why It's Dumb to Abandon Tumblr Today

Since it became clear that Yahoo was going to buy Tumblr, Wordpress saw the number of blog imports from Tumblr rise from about 400 an hour to more than 72,000. That's a ridiculous jump?and also a stupid one. Here's why you shouldn't leave Tumblr just because it's under new management.

  • There's nothing better out there that offers a similar service. Not Wordpress, not Blogspot, not any of those other crappy blogs. Fact.
  • Tumblr is just as much a social network as anything else. It works better with more users; if anything, Yahoo will bring in fresh (okay, maybe old) blood.
  • Yahoo promises to let it carry on alone. Just like Facebook did with Instagram. At least give them a chance to stick to their word.
  • Yahoo could actually make it better. You can expect it to inject its experience where it can be certain it will help?like adding some search powers for better discoverability, for instance.
  • You won't be inundated with ads. Yahoo wants to bring ads to Tumblr, sure?but they'll be opt-in, so they won't be foisted on you if you hate them.
  • Your porn's safe. Yahoo has been stressing that it's going to go out of its way to let people do whatever they damn well want on Tumblr.
  • And your porn's definitely ad-free. Yahoo is?cautiously and sensibly?going to keep ads at arms length from controversial content. That means any risky (risqu??) content won't even be able to feature ads.

  • The deal might not even happen. Just because Yahoo's board approved the acquisition doesn't mean Yahoo's shareholders will. Sure, it's likely to pass muster. But why freak out before there's actually something to freak out about?
  • For the love of God, it's Tumblr. Where else on the web can you find Kim Jong Il looking at things and or texts from super heroes? Exactly.

GOP official: ?Institutional barriers? remain for Republican women seeking office

(The Washington Post)

The Republican Party is actively working to recruit more women to run for public office, but they still face "institutional barriers" to getting involved in GOP politics at the ground level, Republican State Leadership Committee President Chris Jankowski said on Monday.

As part of the RSLC's Right Women Right Now project, the organization, which specializes in recruiting and electing Republicans to local offices like state legislatures and attorneys general, provides resources to female candidates to help navigate the candidacy process and helps them overcome what he described as a Republican "old boy network" that undervalues women with public ambitions.

"Sometimes our party does not value them as much," Jankowski told reporters at a morning briefing at the RSLC headquarters in Washington, D.C., on Monday. "They are a great asset as candidates. They bring a different approach to campaigning. We obviously need more women to enter public office and get on that escalator to higher office so that our leadership reflects stronger women in the Republican Party."

The campaign to recruit women is part of the party's Future Majority Caucus project, a nationwide effort to train and nurture promising female and minority candidates. The group spent $5 million on the project in the past cycle. As a service to new candidates, the organization provides access to a ready-made website that offers a fundraising platform, social media expertise, voter outreach tools and training on how to navigate the candidacy application process in each state.

Women, Jankowski said, can face unique hurdles in breaking into Republican circles.

"It's safe to say that they are institutional barriers where we've met with candidates, women who felt like they weren't part of the old boy network," he said, describing what can be a daunting process for someone at the entry level who hasn't run for office before or been involved in local politics. "It can be a bit of a male-dominated club at that level, and it's important that they feel welcome and they're given the same resources, and we're doing it."

Jankowski said the RSLC plans to roll out a new platform of goals for the project at the group's summit in Austin, Texas, next week.

Give the kidnapped Cleveland women their privacy ? and identity

Many have asked that the women who were held hostage in Cleveland be given privacy to heal. But compassion should involve more than suspending our curiosity. How we actually define people emerging from traumatic experiences can support their healing and the public?s.

By Kurt Shillinger / May 20, 2013

A Cleveland police patrol car sits in front of the boarded up home of Ariel Castro in Cleveland May 14. Three women were rescued from the house after a decade in captivity. Op-ed contributor Kurt Shillinger writes: 'There?s something unresolvable ? and indeed unjust ? about continuing to identify an individual as wronged, harmed, threatened, or less than whole.'

From Cleveland, to Boston, to Newtown, Americans have been sadly and repeatedly forced to grapple with acts of incomprehensible violence and cruelty. One response is to ask probing questions in order to prevent more such tragedies ? questions that can also uncover the resilience of the human spirit. This kind of searching helps society heal.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

But boring in on such tragedies can also have a negative effect ? on those directly involved. Many thoughtful people ? including family members ? have called on the public to grant privacy to the three Cleveland women who broke free from a decade of horrific captivity so they can rebuild their lives.

?We, the public, have to have a sense of leaving them alone, but also rooting for them,? said Frank Ochberg, a clinical professor of psychiatry at Michigan State University, in a PBS Newshour interview May 9, speaking about the Cleveland case. ?We don?t want to over-interview them. We don?t want them to define their lives as those women who were captured for that period of time.?

In the digital age of Facebook, Twitter, cell phone cameras, and a competitive, sensationalist news media, calling on the public to respect a person?s privacy seems oddly virtuous. One wonders whether both the media and their consumers have the self-restraint to resist the lure of voyeuristic reporting on victims that is often dressed up as empathy.

Even if, as a society, we can reject such prying, compassion should involve more than suspending our curiosity. How we actually define people emerging from traumatic experiences can both support their healing and the public?s, too.

Over the past 25 years, more than a dozen countries emerging from violent conflict have established truth commissions to facilitate individual and societal reconciliation and healing. In South Africa, people who were directly affected by human rights violations under white rule could register with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as victims. That designation entitled them to modest monetary compensation.

But then what? For many, the commission process wasn?t restorative enough. In the years that followed, the terminology changed. ?Victims? became ?survivors? as support groups looked for new ways to help people recover from the past.

We have much the same conversation in the United States. We talk about ?victims? and ?survivors? of violent acts, destructive storms, and disease. Accentuating the positive surely helps, but there?s something unresolvable ? and indeed unjust ? about continuing to identify an individual as wronged, harmed, threatened, or less than whole.

Dr. Ochberg, of Michigan State University, noted that the three kidnapped women in Cleveland had been deprived of mothering during their long captivity. He says they?ll need a maternal presence, which of course means unconditional love. There?s a lot to that observation. We might even see it as a challenge to rethink how we identify each other.
